Who is Red John?

Pat shot the Sheriff
And he also shot at SAC PD
Pat shot the Sheriff
And he also shot at SAC PD

All around in his home town,

He was chasing Red John down,
They say that Gale Bertram was guilty
But it turns out it was a hillbilly
It turns out he hates birdies

I say:

Pat shot the Sheriff
And he also shot at SAC PD
Pat shot the Sheriff
And he also shot at SAC PD

Yeah, the promo ruined everything.

It's as simple and stupid as you think.

Biggest disappointment I've ever experienced with a TV show, bar none.

Skip this and just make up an ending. Every theory on this site was better than the real thing.

I think that Kira Tinsley's murder and Brett Partridge's missing arm skin ties in.

The real RJ doesn't have the tattoo. The whole dot tattoo clue was intentionally leaked by RJ to lead Patrick and the CBI to root out RJ's rivals, the Blake Society, for him. What Tinsley saw in the few moments before her death was actually Partridge's arm skin attached to RJ's body (eww). RJ was bringing the group to CBI's attention more directly, since past attempts failed.

Think about it. If RJ was really a member of the Blake group, why would he need to bug the CBI? He could just call Bertram and find out everything he needed to know.

By the way, when I say "rivals", I mean that RJ had been using, manipulating the Blake group. He was never a member, he was just using them, posing as one, but when they discovered it, he decided to get rid of them through the CBI. Maybe even the bugging was a trap, a clue that lead directly to Tinsley, to Tinsley's murder, to the red dot clue, to the Blake group. Red John has been manipulating the situation the whole way.

Sadly, this doesn't mean I know who Red John is. Haffner is the surveillance expert, but he's supposedly dead. It looks like McAllister in the promo for the next episode, but I doubt it's that easy. It might not even be as easy as this theory. I'm just throwing this out there.

The weird thing about all this is how now everything looks like a clue. We're all looking at everything, and I think Heller intended it. We're jumping at shadows. "THIS MUST MEAN THIS." So I have to admit that my own reasoning is flawed. I thought this whole idea up while drifting off to sleep, so I may noto have been thinking clearly.

Who's sadder, the people who still think Partridge is alive or the people who thought it would be Stiles?

Stiles is too egotistical to have a secret identity like Red John. He wants to be admired as Brett Stiles, not as Red John. It's his entire character. His ego would not permit a secret, second identity. And seriously, of course it wasn't stiles. McDowell is too obvious as a villain character (the kind of character he plays almost exclusively) and he wouldn't have been on the Visualize farm because he leads Visualize. It was probably just some side project he didn't oversee himself.

Stiles? The least logical choice to be RJ.

At least the Partridge camp has SOME reason behind it, though it's not looking very good for them.

But hey, what do I know? I thought it was Haffner or Smith.

Looks like the ol' Sheriff is Red John, based on the curious hairline of the man Jane is chasing in the promo for "Red John" (episode) next week. Bertram is probably just a final misdirection.

It's sort of disappointing. I mean, I guess in a way it makes sense. Wears the kind of boots RJ wore in the S2 finale. Smells of "pine and earth" like Rosalind Harker described. Good whistler. Has a phobia. Fits together. Guy even prefers to refer to Patrick on a first name basis, wants to be friendly with him, gain his confidence.

My biggest problem, though, is... who is Thomas McAllister?! I mean, he's in the second ever episode of the show in a non-RJ-related case, has NOTHING to do with Red John, doesn't even appear in person again until this season. Why was he even on the suspect list to begin with?! He's a nobody! But not like, you know, a "yeah, he's a nobody, so he's perfect", but just a NOBODY. That's like Red John being, I don't know... the Russian gangster from S1, Shirali Arlov. What a random character to make RJ. The writers might as well just admit they themselves had no idea who it would be until now.

So before "Fire and Brimstone" it was Bertram, Haffner, Smith, Stiles, and McCallister.

Supposing Kira Tinsley was killed by RJ, then it's narrowed to
Bertram, Smith, and McCallister, who all have the three red dot tattoo.

McCallister seems too old and has nothing to do with the RJ case, but
Rosalind Harker did describe RJ as smelling of pine. McCallister hunts,
so he probably goes to the woods regularly, thus a pine smell. However,
Rosalind also said he has a "gentle voice" and Xander Berkley, who
plays McCallister, has a rough voice.

Rosalind describes RJ has having "short, straight hair" and Bertram
is bald (McCallister as well). Rosalind says RJ is "just under six feet
tall". Bertram is too tall to be RJ. Rosalind also says RJ's "not
muscular, but not soft either". Reede Smith is heavy, but can he be
described as "soft"? Reede Smith's voice isn't exactly "gentle" as
Rosalind describes, but he does have "short, straight hair".

What if the person who killed Kira Tinsley wasn't RJ at all? Just
somebody else in the Tyger Tyger group? Maybe RJ isn't even in the
group, the group is just trying to cover up his trail so they can catch
him themselves, like Robert Kirkland was trying. Or maybe something else
entirely.
If that's the case, you can't rule out Ray Haffner, who would have been 21 and in Visualize at the time of the barn incident.

Brett Stiles is too old to be RJ, period. He absolutely isn't RJ. So for me, it's either Reede Smith or Ray Haffner.

We're all just assuming that the person who killed Tinsley was in fact Red John. But let's not. It could be a misdirection. Patrick Jane assumes it was Red John who killed Kira Tinsley because he doesn't know about the Tyger group.
