Van Pelt is is the daughter of Bret Stiles.
Van Pelt is is the daughter of Bret Stiles.
Several reasons why he is RJ:
-He has many names: Laroche, Red John, Otis...
-He took a kid for a deer and shot him with no mercy. That can only be done by a heartless killer.
-Later, he died eaten by the walkers.
-As he is dead now, he can murder Jane's happy memories without breaking the law
Theory 2 -Follow up to post # 11660
If Red John was at mall in Strawberries and Cream but is not Reede Smith as possible in 11660 then Bertram would be the suspect hiding in plain sight in his red and blue striped tie. Have always thought that Bertram fit the profile and size of Red John wearing black jeans and boots when he saved Jane's life and it was very convenient that CBI Bertram appeared for the very first time in the very next episode. Realize that Rosalind described a person not quite like Bertram but if she is truly in love with Red John then why would she assist Jane with an accurate description?

Seeing a lot of people wondering about the 3 coffees that Kirkland had and wondering if it was a clue and if so what. I'm really surprised so many are confused by this since so many of us here obviously suffer from it. It's Kirklands phobia people! He is extremely OCD. Maybe I see it more clearly than others because I have a son who has Aspergers syndrome and that is a key symptom. His hand movements, his constant positioning of things in certain places like his torture tools. He even says as much when he says, "I like to be thorough."
Each suspect has a phobia of some sort....
Partridge-flies
Haffner-Spiders
McAllister-Birds
Smith-heights
Bertram-how other see him, especially the media
Stiles-I'm not sure about yet, but I'm sure he has one
Kirkland-OCD
The coffee is nothing more than drawing attention to his phobia like they have everyone else in the last few episodes.
Am posting this idea two different ways to allow for different possible votes on suspects.
Theory for voting option 1
Have read many times on this site that Heller has been quoted as saying 1) The viewers are going to be disappointed when they learn who the real Red John is 2) Red John is like Waldo hiding in the background and 3) The real Red John appeared in the Mall Scene in Strawberries and Cream Part 2. With all that in mind, as a viewer from the day The Mentalist aired, I would be most disappointed if Reede Smith turned out to be Red John. When he was listed as one of the 7 had to refresh my memory as to whom this guy was since he was more in the background than the other suspects. I have rewatched the Strawberries and Cream mall scene several times and unfortunately the only person I have seen who resembles one of the 7 is someone who looks like he could be Reede Smith :(
If you have the video, rewatch the conversation between Jane and Bertram when Jane says he believes Red John "has friends all over the state. Powerful friends; I'm serious." As Bertram shifts around in his chair, a man, very similar in size, shape and looks to Reede Smith, dressed in a reddish shirt, khaki jacket and jeans walks in the background behind Bertram and then behind Jane. He appears to be carrying a cup of coffee. Have looked and looked for someone else that resembles the list of 7 but that is all I have been able to find.
If you think man in background at the mall is Reede Smith thus making him Red John, please click on green for plausible.
Have found a picture of this scene on the web and am posting it under comments.
First of all I think Lorelei Martins is Red John, because of 'He is Mar'
This is the Theory http://www.whoisredjohn.com/See-a-theory-Red-John/11648
Let us discuss one Major Point.
According to TV Guide spoiler of 6.08 'Red John', in the next episode
1. Lisbon is a small time police officer
2. Rigsby and Van Pelt have a detective agency
3. Cho is in the CBI
and most importantly
4. Patrick is a 'Wanted Man' after killing Red John
Patrick kills Red John and is a wanted man, which means he is not able to prove whoever he killed to be Red John.
I think that is one majoy clue, we need to identify that one person whom if Patrick kills he is going to jail and that will be Red John. What say?
One Partridge-advocate made an interesting point saying we degrade actual clues to red herrings too easily. I want to clarify why that is NOT the case. Each suspect has his red herrings, meant to mislead the viewer. I will summon a few.
1) Partridge: his voice; his admiration of bloodworks.
2) Kirkland: Do I know you? - No, but I know you; the twin-story.
3) Bertram: I am many things to many people; 666; his secret Tiger club.
4) Haffner: Lisbon's dream; the spider.
5) McAllister: Call me Tom; fear of heights, Tiger club.
6) Smith: The Red Is Me; Tiger club.
7) Stiles: the red face-painting during his ceremony, the mindreading on Grace.
Ofcourse, there are a whole bunch more of them that have been found during the years. But you have to look trough them. And focus on what happens story-wise. Personaly I could only find some real clues on Haffner's side:
- Lisbon tells Jane Haffner (ex-FBI) is good at wiretapping -> Lisbon calls to LaRoche about Sally Carter -> Haffner is busy and agitated, not interested in the case anymore -> Sally Carter is found dead, just in time, with fake suicide note comfirming Timothy Carter as Red John -> Haffner thought coast was clear after Jane shot (a fake) RJ, now he realises he celebrated too early -> he knowingly falls for Jane's trick and gets the hell out of his environment.
- Three Red Barn murders -> Haffner wants to discuss business with Lisbon -> in fact he is more interested in the case and the names on Coopers archivelist from 1988 -> he's not contented yet because the mother and her daughter are only accused of one Red Barn murder instead of three -> he uses his client-alibi -> Lisbon is starting to suspect he was not only Visualize but also personaly involved.
- A nurse asks about Carmen Lee -> Jane out of the blue makes a call to Sophie Miller -> later on Haffner walks in with a lot of Red John questions.
- Lisbon asks Cooper where Haffner is, not his habit to leave without proper goodbye -> Cooper tells he's at a client (alibi again) -> the spy gets murdered, just in time
- Looked like a clue, but cannot been included as such because it can be a coinsidence + not important enough story-wise: RJ drinks thee with his left hand, Haffner makes a call with his left hand. Not enough to be named a clue so let's keep it on a herring for now. Same thing with the 'Heisman'-theory. Even the real RJ has his apparent deceptions - it would strike too much if he didn't.
So, a red herring is an event standing on his own (oneliner, coded name, description, fobies, interviews with makers/actors) without story-wise relevance, while a clue is an essential continuation-part of the tale.
Other clues:
- The pidgeons, linked to Partridge's dead and to Lisbon's happy memory.
- Jane returning on Partridge, Red John returning on Jane
- Partridge misspeaking about Lorelei (plausible he helped RJ, not for sure)
- Kirkland's three coffees for two (still unclear)
- etc.
So I hope you can see the difference :) Ofcourse, there can be room for discussion whether an occurence is relevant enough to be called a clue or not.
