i have every reasen to say he is red john because red john only appeared a couple times in the show and he appeared  on the first pisode of the mentalist another reasen is that he matched the voice of the man that claims he is red john and rescued jane plus it could be bret stiles  he has a lot of power and money so he could be good for the job

I think it is him because he was in the very first episode at a, "red John" crime scene. He was far too knowledgeable and eager about the crime scene. Also his voice is the same as the red john who saved Jane's life. It definitely makes sense.

Yes he's smart and has briliant ideas but there is no way he's red john. He heard Red John in that limousine from a phone call.

Patrick Jane Has been put under hypnosis for the whole duration of the series by someone, the word used is roll tide it was done to jane in the last episode of season 2 he gets tapped on the shoulder twice. The same hypnosis was done to other characters throughout the show like kristina frye and that waiter in the last episode of season 2  
. I think hypnosis word he uses is roll tide.

Most likely,Red John is a person Patrick Jane knows but is not aware of his dark side.It is probably an important person who can watch what Patrick and the CBI team are up to at any time.His IQ is very high,as he can manipulate people and make them do anything to please his desire.It is possible that Red John is a member of the team or a person who closely works with the team because of his apparently perfect knowledge about Patrick and CBI movements,as he is always one step forward.I cannot name a person but it is probably and important one in the show. I chose Gale Bertram just because i had to in order to post my theory.
