I see many complaining about the pigeon thing.

I think that Bruno meant to let Patrick use this "cheap" trick because after all these years of trying all these well thought out plans and traps he failed to get Red John with, he went "back to basics" and just outsmarted him with a small cheap trick.

How would you have liked this to happen though?I also wanted a showdown but if you think about it they can't have a gunfight, or a sword fight or argue each other to death.  Endless dialogue would have made it stale.  The trick Patrick use was right up his alley and he knew it's something RJ wouldn't expect.

I only feel that the execution of the trick was a bit rushed from a writing point of view. We don't truly see where the pigeon comes from and the way it starts is truly unrealistic:
Patrick: "Can I show you something?"
RJ: "Sure" *Walks over and holds out his hand . . . uhm DUH!

The rest of the RJ reveal sequence I really don't mind. It was poetic and it was a fitting end.

The writers have from the beginning of this series had poetry as a huge theme and in my opinion this episode ran like poetry.

There was this monster created by years of hype and mental torture, but he comes to Patrick in the form of a man. A mere man, weak and afraid of death.

I think also that in a continuation of the Bible-themed season we've had so far, it may have been the overall idea of the writers to show the "lucifer" of the series Red John be defeated by good, Patrick Jane and then beg for forgiveness.  Patrick passed judgement on Red John. He says to Red John that he is an evil man.

Revelations, if I am not mistaken, speaks of a dove that brings peace. Maybe that is where the pigeon comes in. And the church and all of the symbols we have been given in this season.

I think you get my idea.

In short, I think that the reason the episode played out the way it did was because of a central theme the writers followed with the Red John story. He was a "beast" that deceived men and fooled nations to follow him. But he came in the form of a man, who when finally brought to judgement, sought forgiveness and mercy.

Many would have loved a creepy character be revealed as Red John and the episode be an amazing showdown. I also would have loved that.

But the ending that we were given is a satisfying one when you look at how well that theme was carried forward.

If you look at the poetry, the symbolism and take a step back to see the bigger picture, the Red John story was a brilliant masterpiece and the end was the Revelations of this story.

William Blake's poetry and art dealt mainly with religion and Heaven and Hell, and God and the devil.

The next episode is also appropriately titled "My Blue heaven".

Take all of that in and you will come to the realization that Bruno Heller wrote and created a masterpiece of a story.

What in gods good name did i just watch? A mastermind serial killer was deceived by bread crumbs and a pigeon? Good god i feel like the life has been sucked out of me in one quick sweeping motion. After 6 years of anticipation and expectation, Percy from fuc*ing Nikita is Red John? When he did the voice i just lost it to be honest............... Sadly BH has just destroyed 6 years of his life's work + he has disappointed his fans.

Mentalist fans, please stop getting your hopes up because if you do you will be broken again. Red John is over and you might get your explanation in the coming episodes about the list of 7 but thats it. Partridge is dead so stop making stupid idiotic theories and accept the fact that our show was just shat on.

One more thing really bugged me which I was reminded of looking elsewhere at discussion of RJ - THE SECRET CODE/LIST from the flashdrive??? In Bertram's storage locker. With presumably expensive bottles of wine and crates full of cash. The wine and cash seem standard fare for a secret storage locker space, but they never even mentioned the CBI looking into the coded list, and that was our last big standout clue if I recall correctly. Maybe it's just Bertram's off-shore account numbers in hidden format…but this seems drastically secretive for someone who already has a super secret space to hide things.

Also, Grace would have been the natural person to crack codes given her supposed whiz bang computer hacking skills, but she deferred to Jane in her passing remark - why?

I have enjoyed this blog for a while now and since we all seem to think it (might) be over here's a few lingering questions  and thoughts which I haven't noticed mentioned yet…some of these could be answered if I just went back and rewatched (I'm lazy, though)

-Did the tombstone for janes wife in the wide shot of the cemetery have her name (incorrectly) as priscilla ruskin jane? i could have sworn i paused it to read the names because I actually forgot what they were, and I think it said Priscilla, but her names supposed to be Angela. Maybe I didn't look closely enough.

-As for Bertram's comments on the phone to Jane regarding a voice, what he said was something like "Do I have to use a funny voice or something?" Yes, it's a red herring, but you all seem to be baited by it too easily. I think there was a natural explanation for the question - he was jokingly asking Jane as to whether he needed to pretend he was someone else calling in to his phone because Bertram knew Jane's line would likely be tapped and didn't want police to nab him before he gets to escape with all his cash (how did he get all of that anyway? secret drug stashes he's selling from the evidence lockers? what?). What he did NOT say was "Do I have to use *THAT* funny voice anymore?" which some of you seem to be remembering the line as. It was more like, "Are we being listened to? Can I speak openly?"

Other miscellany -
-If RJ is still out there, why do we assume he necessarily has/had the three dots? I don't know if the Blake Association all went en masse with thousands of unknown, widespread members to a single tattoo parlor to get inked up together. He could be a member, know the password (probably created it, if we assume he's the poetic mastermind who loves Romantic English verse), and never need to have the tat. Beyond that, they all seem to identify solely by verbal code "Tyger, Tyger" - I suspect cops might beat each other up if they had to ask one another to take their shirt off each time they wanted to identify themselves as members.

-I enjoyed reading the theories that RJ is a woman, and when I was thinking about that, I started noticing how 50% of the women on the show are redheads, which is far disproportionate to real world populations and even disproportionate to model/actresses across tv shows. Clearly the red haired beauties tied in easily with all the red themes in the show, but beyond that, I wonder if there's some linguistic play on the names…not exactly sure how to put this - Red John, John as in John Doe, Jane Doe is the female counterpart to that anonymous name non-identifier, Jane is Patrick Jane, but Jane could also be Red Jane (instead of Red John) and the pun could be she's a redhead (hey, they used a redhead for our first, and apparently preferred Red John - Timothy Carter).

Simon Baker: "In the season 2 finale, when Jane was captured and Red John did that 'Tyger, Tyger' thing with the mask on? That was me. I played both characters in that scene,"

Well there you go, PJ was RJ after all. LOL

I know lots of people find it disappointing that Heller didn't know who RJ was until a year ago, but I don't. I think it was very clever on his part.

Heller left it open for half a dozen characters, including an unknown one, to be Red John. This kept everyone guessing. As long as he didn't close those characters off in some way with some piece of evidence then the game was still afoot.
If Heller had picked his Red John from the beginning, he may have inadvertently given it away.

And while McAllister was not in my top two choices as Red John, I am not disappointed it was him.
But, after watching storylines like Strawberries and Cream with very complex twists and turns and clever writing, this episode of revealing and killing Red John was exceptionally disappointing.

If Heller had put the effort into making a two parter that was as convoluted as S & C was, nobody would be walking away from this with a frown on their face. They might have preferred a different Red John, but they'd have had a wonderfully clever episode worthy of the capture of Red John. And this was not it.

It was too easy. Too simple. It was, in the end, harder to catch Craig O'laughlin than it was to catch Red John.

Shame.
