( not accusing bret stiles. Computer wouldn't let me chose anyone). Ok so I think that it is possible that we have seen red john on the show but if so he is someone none of us have thought of. I mean all of our suspects are to obvious and are just there to through us off.
As for Kirkland, he is definately not red John and is probably out for his own sort of revenge. Also all the info he got on that last episode is bogus. Jane smiled for a reason. Bret stiles is way to obvious. Mashburn too. But honestly I don't think we have seen red John yet. I think it will be someone from janes past that he hasn't seen in decades, possibly a relative.

My theory is that RJ is not one single person, but a group of the high powered people we have seen in the series thus far all working together as a "hobby" and Robert Kirkland is one of them, however for the purposes of this theory I will still refer to RJ as a singular "he".

So far, RJ has outwitted local, state and national police forces - he has gone to great lengths to commit the "perfect" crimes, covered up his earlier missteps which might have exposed him, and actively sought out an opponent worthy of the name.

Kirkland is interested because even though RJ has baffled professional law enforcement, Patrick Jane has got closer on several occasions than the police ever have - Kirkland wants to know how he is doing this, and what potential mistakes Jane is uncovering in his investigations, hence the break in to copy his notes.

Kirkland killed Jason Lennon because he could identify one of the other members of the group, and that was unacceptable.

This isn't a theory on who Red John is but to why Jane was smiling at the end of last episode. (Season 5 Episode 19) well I think that Jane was smiling because he knew that Kirkland had people come in his room and he knew he tricked them by switching information that he has collected with bogus info. He knew he tricked Kirkland. I don't necessarily know if Kirkland is a good guy or a bad guy but I think hes a bad good guy if that makes any sense. I am RJ. If you look the episodes you can see me always supporting PJ in his crazy plans without asking anything, that is beacause im judging, the way PJ thinks and how he finds the assassin amuse me. Why did i kill that girls? I had a crappy childhood. Why RedJohn? I like Red, is the colour of the fire, it relax me.

I say this because everyone she ends up dating is some psycho path. Maybe this is a way they can pass notes about Jane. 
Also she is always staying back at the desk, which could give her enough time to get more rj stuff done.
Also she applied for a job shortly after Patrick Jane became a member of the cbi. This could have been a master idea from RJ.
Lastly her hair is red
