ALEX JANE.

He fits what we KNOW about him. It would make sense, he is pretty much the only one we KNOW who is nearly as talented as patrick. we saw him before season 3 finale. It seems to have a sense of 'fitting' in my mind, and has a planted seed which is just enough under the surface to surprise us...? i am no certain  but why not!? Patrick ran off from him to be with his wife and children  and plus, the carnival excuse would still fit! (or else, it may not be his father, but a step brother partick doesn't know about, trained by his possible deceased father to hate Jane  as he was never 'as good as Jane' We saw how forceful his father was, and how he persuaded Patrick to do things he hated. It is in a sense a quite poetic solution. this could possible just squeeze into the timeline. It is a big jump,, and i am merely wondering. I just hope it isn't one of the 7... it would be a little bit of a letdown!

I don't think there is a killer.  I think that the entire show is based on the fictional writings of an author who perhaps is yet to be determined.  The final episode will end with the author of the "Patrick Jane Series" saving the latest file and shutting down his or her computer / writing and retiring as an author with no final wrap up of loose ends or conclusion on who the "killer" really is.

As first introduced to us through RED JOHN
i tried every anagram etc. And  added the digits up to make 7.
In ep23 you find out there are 7 suspects.
I ask, is it too much to say that it isn't all of them working as a group.
I am still trying to find how each letter corresponds to each of them, but still the best theory i feel for a surprise element.

There are some crazy theories here. I will explain why i don't think its one of the names in the list, i know what Heller said. I don't want to believe that. That is the magic of 'The Mentalist'. Its unexpected.
Also the list has some stupid names which would be a real letdown if one of them was RJ. Lets go over the names :

Out of 7 :

1. Bertrum - Already proven in the final episode of season 3 or 4 that its not him. Its highly unlikely he hired that girl and O' Laughlin.

2. Patridge - NO. Only shown in 3 episodes and why would he tell Jane that its not RJ when it is RJ since RJ is doing this all for Jane. Also too obvious and too much evidence towards him which is out of the nature of the series to go with the one that the evidence is pointing.

3. Sheriff i dont know his name - Saw him only once in season 1. That proves all . If an unknown character is RJ, then the series is retarded.

4. Bret Stilles - Too obvious i think but its plausible since he owns visualize and basically can persuade a lot of people about crazy stuff, maybe the people working for him were manipulated which he is good at that. But again too obvious.

5. Ray Haffner - Not really that manipulative. Why would he leave the CBI if he was RJ. Fine ok lets say his RJ. Supposedly He left because he didn't have to be a mole anymore since he stopped killing for some time anyway and Jane had given up. Then why propose Lisbon to follow him in that job thing. Doesnt make sense at all. Could be an accomplice but unlikely.

6. Bob Kirkland - Really obvious. Maybe an accomplice or some people say an enemy but why if he was an enemy of RJ kill that guy who was at the hospital who knew who RJ was.

7. Dr. Forgot his name :D - Not him. Hardly seen him and again it would be a letdown.

Finally maybe more story is going to be revealed for each character in season 6 i think. That would be the real time to start guessing and investigating. Most people here are throwing long shots like me. Its too early.

I believe it's none of the suspects. But it's from the team that got hold of the Strategic Mindmap that was located in Patrick's Rooftop Room.

The reason I am saying is that, Patrick already knew that the room would be explored and everything copied from it. He squeezed a toothpick in the door and later when he arrived he saw that the toothpick was not on the door, but on the floor. So the team that investigated what's in the room already had the 7 major suspects. Therefore, RJ, who is somewhat related to this team, already knew Patrick's shortlist and then acted as he had foreseen his list on the episode finale video.

I think Patrick will utilize his tactic to make RJ feel more intelligent than himself and look for deficiencies on RJ actions. In the end, it's a multi million dollar series and the longer it gets, the more profit it leaves to producers and actors. Therefore, making it longer than needed is something that is at their benefit, of course.

Regardless of who Red John is, I think it would be awesome for Bruno to do a show based on the life of Red John during the same time line.  It would be amazing to see how he can persuade and run this organization while keeping a regular life in the eyes of the general public.

Red John is Amos Van Pelt aka Sheriff McAllister.  Grace is working for her father as a mole at CBI.
