I did the theory 3206. For me, Janes wife was cheating on him and perhaps his child was not his daughter after all. He goes crazy, killed them both and manage to create a new identity to blame for the crimes. But lets forget Patrick and focus on the 7 suspects. Reede Smith and Bob Kirkland came too late in the game (season 5) for being Red John. Sheriff Mcallister is almost unknown and the reveal of him being Red John will have zero dramatic impact. Gale Bertan? Just because of the tea? Because hes a fisherman? Because he knows Blake? Cmon, I knewn the Tyger poem before the Mentalist and thats not make me the killer. Only because he share some tastes with the killer doesnt make him Red John. Brett Partrige? He doesnt have the web of influences, the conections and the money to be Red John. My bet is on Bret Stiles. Hes the leader of a religious cult we know for a fact Red Jonh in conected. Thats concrete evidence. Ok, Haffner is also linked to Visualize, but Stiles is fricking Malcolm Mcdowell. The guy worked with Kubrick. Played one of the best villains of the history of the cinema. Heller himself said if we open a door and a mid range actor was playing Red John was going to be disapointing. So, with Malcolm Mcdowell at his disposal, he will make Diamond Reed Red John? Or Jack Partrige Plotnick? Just my two cents here. Stiles is Red John.

I do not believe that the real Red John was on the "Final 7" list. Jane obviously expected that his research was subject to compromise, else he would not have used the classic spy trick of placing an easily "invisible" item that, when displaced, would reveal unwanted visitors, into the door frame of his sanctum sanctorum. (Jane used a toothpick; Bond used a strand of hair in the original novel of Casino Royale.)

I believe that Jane mocked up a completely false--'though completely plausible--trail of clues for the express purpose that they would be compromised. This would be why Red John "knows" who the suspects are:  they are precisely who Jane wants Red John to think he suspects. I also think Jane already knows who Red John is, but needs more hard evidence, or has at least narrowed his actual suspect list down far further than the seven on the "official" list.

Is the real Red John "accidentally" on the suspect list, in an attempt by Jane to force Red John to reveal himself definitively--and provable in a court of law as such--through some mistake? Likely. Is the real Red John deliberately NOT on the list, with Jane hoping to trap Red John as the latter stalks the "Final 7" (we already know Red John is not a fan of others getting the credit for his own work). Also likely.

Heller is right, regardless. We will be disappointed when we find out who Red John is, but not because we think Heller selected the least popular--or "best"-- suspect. We will be disappointed because there will be no more mystery. Jack the Ripper's infamy is entirely due to the fact that we never found out who he was nor why he did it. When Red John is revealed--and Heller will have to reveal it, as millions of fans will cry out for his blood if he does not, out of a demand for closure--the disappointment we will feel will be the absence of anticipation, because, let's be honest, we don't really want the mystery to end...just yet.

p.s. Has Red Sweater Guy (from the mall food court) been completely discredited yet? And did anyone else think he bore more than a passing resemblance to Kirkland (the man behind the attic break-in?) I'm just sayin'... (Although a bit too obvious, I think he's at best an acolyte, not the man himself. And if Jane named an actual disciple on the list, you know Red John would have to do something about that...)

Although Mashburn is not on the list, he's a better fit than any of those on the list,

In an unrelated vein, I think it would be cool to have Red John turn out to be Stiles's son. This would explain why Visualize protects rj, how rj has access to so many wounded souls who he then turns into killers, where rj learned mind control, and rj's source of unlimited funds. If this turns out to be true, then Brett partridge is my number one suspect (family name.....Brett???) because he would be the right age to be Stiles's son.

There is a major tie in with O'laughlin, Van Pelt, Haffner and Red John.  There is more to the story with O'laughlin and Van Pelt than was told to us.  Haffner is very suspicious.  He has the look of a guy who would like to hack women up with a sharp  blade.

If i could choose, Jane will be John. Thats a shocking, totally disturbing finale, with the main character that we follow for 5 years noUiw being the villain of the story. Of course, it will alienate the majority of the fans that wants a happy ending with Jane and Lisbon being toghether and Heller himself said Jane is not John. He couldnt be lying, right? RIGHT? Well, maybe hes just not telling the whole story. Maybe the list is legit and one of the 7 is Red Johns face. I mean, Red John needs a physical presence, to interact and brainwashed his followers. But maybe, Patrick is the mastermind behnd it all. Hes not Red John, but he created him and have someone else impersonating him. Too crazy? Maybe. Ill take Jane out of the picture in my next post and focus only on the 7 suspects. If i need to choose one of them, it have to be Bret Stiles.

I believe that red jhon is jane's brother Jimmy who is also Brett Partridge after changing his name .                                                                                               PJ is feeling guilty about his brother's death ; and he doesn't know that he survived ; that explains why RJ is just playing games with his brother ; and about that happy memorie I think that Jane has told it to his brother ; they are brothers that's why the end is going to be disappointing for Patrick
I am just guessing here but that's how the show works
If I am correct the question would be why would Brett killed his brother's wife and child?

Red John is someone with red hair and he has a connection with on of the existing characters we've seen.

It would have to be Danny Partridge of the Partridge family.  Brett is is son and accomplice.

Case closed!
