Virgil is 'Red John'
He left CBI just after De Boscos team were wiped out and he gave an unconvincing speech to the press
Also, in season one, the episode 'red Johns shoes' Virgil is shown walking up a staircase in CBI with red shoes on. - but this scene was cut from the aired show and was a deleted scene
At the time of filming season 1 the writers had no idea of how sucessful the show would become and so wouod have needed somwone from the beginning to be Red John in case the show was pulled and a swift conclusion to the mystery was needed
Virgil also gives Patrick a list of suspects, a red john list made up by red john himself
Heres the clincher... in another deleted scene from season one, patrick is talking to virgil... virgil is drinking tea... and on the bottom of his cup.... is this symbol.... :)
I believe Kirkland is the head of 'Red John,' a cult group of 'subconciously hypnotised' people, brainwashed to carry out his bidding. Theres a long running theme of mind control and this is key to solving the riddle.
Patrick has known Kirkland for most of his life but doesnt realise it, because Kirkland isnt who he appears to be... literally! .... Kirkland has undergone facial plastic surgery to change his identity and is the reason why Lennon doesnt recognise him. The clue is in the trademark smiley face :)
Also, i believe Kirkland actually grew up with Patrick, both from traveller roots, until something happened between them. Kirkland has a list of deciples, all of which are unaware theyre working for 'red John,' until a 'trigger' reveals the truth and a 'Red John' disciple is revealed. Heres the catch... Patrick Jane is the 'trigger' and is unaware hes working for the 'Red John' as well.... weve never seen the crime scene of patricks murdered family and theres a reason for that :)
Seeing season 5 finale. Even though there is a list of 7suspects i think its fake. And the only way RJ could kill Eileen Turner is someone who was close to PJ from childhood. RJ would be Danny Ruskin PJ's brother-in-law.

Bruno Heller has already said that PJ is not RJ so thats thats theory done with... end of.
Heller has also said the next season the hunt will be on, there is no twists or turns just hard facts & evidence to finding out who is RJ. He says we can trust the list, so lets go with that for now,
As for theorys like lisbon is Rj or working with him... ???????????????
i am sure that LISBON is def NOT RJ? or working with him. Without her PJ has nothing! like it or lump it this is just the facts of the show, he wouldn't survive that sort of betryal from her, (revenge or no revenge. He just wouldn't.)
The fact is finding out or losing the only thing in his life he cares for, his partner/best friend that would just make PJs story even worse than it already is & despite all the horrfic things that have happened he has survived it & come out the other side and lisbon has been there with him to help him do that. She also has been bombed, shot, hurt, lost her job nearly serveral times all for him & she would def die for him if it came down to it. Lisbon ???? I'm sorry but that's even not a very original twist thats just poor.

Well first of all i think it's a great series.My theorie is based on facts.It is impossible that any of the crew or even Patrick(saw this posted with a spilt personality factor) could be Red John because at the end of the last eEP series 3 Red John kills the secretary(his acomplice) on the hallway of the station while the whole team is upstairs filmed in the same place.We get a slight look at RJ's back that lokks very much like Kirkland(hight weight and hair)2nd ofc he has acces to all the files all the facts about the cases and if he can compete with Jane intelectualy he could have figured out the list.The List is not bogus(the director states we can trust that list).If we watch all the scnes with Kirkland we find the one he shackes hands with Jane the first time and it is obvious the director wanted us to notice that.When he and Lisbon interview L.Martins mother is also a scene where he gives away nhis true nature.(take a look at his mimics).It may also be the case he has got more surprise accolites and some even on Jane's list.
