LATEST THEORIES

In the Canada promo for episode 2, Jane says something along the lines of:  "I know something that RJ doesn't, he's killed two people within days now, he's getting desperate, a little crazy, he doesn't realize he's made a terrible mistake."

I think this is the clue that's the beginning of the list being revealed as a fake.  Jane's real list was the names shown in his notebook around midseason.  He spent the rest of season 5 subtly advertising a fake list to trap RJ.

What better way to get down to a more manageable suspect pool than by having Jane announce that the list is fake and he's narrowed his real list down to three people?

Most people on this site have decided to accept the list and perhaps I'm as delusional as the people that think Jane is RJ, but if I'm right that the list is a fake then I'd say I'm also likely to be right on my Walter Mashburn theory.

Can anyone verify that Red John is actually one of the seven suspects from the list? Yes, there is a list. Yes, it is Jane's list. However, in order to answer my question I will need to re-watch old episodes. Does Red John in fact say that he is on the list? Or does he just acknowledge the existence of a list?

This theory is based on the supposition that Patridge is dead, that assumption is to be hold until the next episode.

So, the reduced list comes to this (in order of plausibility):

6. Gale Bertram: although he is a really powerful man and kind of mysterious, he has not the psycho personality nor the intuition to be Red John, my theory about him is that he may have debts with Red John and is part of his informative crew.

5. Reese Smith: He is too compulsive and aggressive, contrary to Red John who is an "Artist, a Show man", he does not kill because of anger, he kills because of pride and enjoyment.

4. Thomas McAllister: The theory #4740 explains why he is not lower on this list, but we do not have anything on him, he just appeared in one episode and he was just a creppy cop.

2. Bret Stiles: He is with visualize which we know is pretty related to Red John's start (Red Barn episode), he has the intelligence, personality and charisma of a perfect Red John suspect. However, at his age he can not be Red John. But, he may be one of the main accomplices of Red John, he also has power inside the police (as we saw when he helped Patrick free Lorelei).

2 Bob Kirkland: It is clear he is deeply involved with RJ; he stole Jane's research, killed a RJ's friend to silence him, and has a rivalry with Patrick Jane, but he is far too obvious, and he is NOT cautious. I will say he is RJ right hand.

1. Ray Haffner: Raymond is like Jane; he has control of himself (and control others), he can be smooth and casual, he is a "member" of visualize and (probably) was at the barn when the first RJ murder occurred. He tried to take Lisbon, remember Lisbon has been a RJ target in many episodes, when RJ asked for a gift he asked for Lisbon, and now he took Lisbon to weaken Jane (I assume she is not dead and this is a plan to stop Jane)

I wish to present two ideas:

1. I think we shouldn't arrive in a judgement regarding any of the suspects based on the characters portrayed to us so far. If RJ is one of those 7 - and Heller confirmed he is - I think what we saw so far of that character may have simply been a deceitful act.

Take Reed Smith, based on his character as it was portrayed to us, none us would consider him RJ material. But if the Reed Smith we know is simply a facade,  meant to deceive every one. Maybe that's what RJ does to hide himself, present himself and perform as a mediocre hot head.

In fact, up until Bret Partridge was slayed by RJ, I thought he could be RJ not because he is weird and has a psycho feel around him, but because Heller portrayed him to us as a youngish, not very charismatic figure, again not really RJ material, if you will.

I think that may be what Heller meant when he said we will be disappointed when RJ is revealed. So I'm thinking: which of the remaining 6 suspects would be most disappointing, if you will, based on the character portrayed to us so far? I think Reed Smith. So maybe Reed Smith is the facade RJ uses.

2. Another reason why I previously thought Bret Partridge may be the one was the tender voice fit the RJ as we heard speak.

But now Bret Partridge is gone, there is no other suspect whose actual voice sounds anything like what we heard from RJ in those few scenes. Now I believe that RJ used some kind of voice alteration device during those encounters.

If Brett Partridge is dead and he isnt RJ and i say IF because this photo here from s02e08 http://thementalist.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Red_John_Theories?file=Vlcsnap-2012-10-09-23h24m43s165.png tells me that Partridge is either Red John or a very faithful servant of RJ who accepts to beat till death by real RJ just to misslead Lisbon for RJ to catch her ,then there is only one option.Sherrif Thomas McCallister.First of all he and Partridge are the only ones from the list of 7 who appeared in season 1. Second Dumar(s01e23) was a sherrif more than 10 years as he says.He is too young dont you think? So someone else who is also a Sherrif put him in that place. In s01e02 where McCallister appears we have the same thing with S03e24 where the fake RJ revealed. And of course RJ isnt gonna be Gale Bertram as many of you suggest..Come on you saw that dialogue between him, PJ and Lisbon...Way too obvious!!!!I really cant wait for the next episodes !!!

Whoever Red John is, it is someone who knows that Lisbon won't be getting any back-up because the local police blame her for the officer being shot and also knows her well enough that she will go into the house without back-up. He would also guess or know that Lisbon illegally put a trace on all of the suspects on the list. It has to be one of the law enforcement people and most of these clues point more towards Bertram than to the others. I wonder if the lack of back-up (actually the knowledge that the local police are out to get Lisbon) is the clue that Heller said would be presented in this episode.

I've read this site many times but never wrote in until now. I think the big clue mentioned in interviews is that bag or curtain above sink that Lisbon sees right before she's attacked. I can clearly make out a letter 'G' on it. Not sure what it is but I think it's the clue which will come back later.

As for suspects, I think thry're all RJ's friends except the one who is the real killer of Jane's family. That's why Partidge said Tyger Tyger and that's how RJ knows the list, because they're all connected. Either way, the bag or curtain above sink I think is a huge clue which will come back into show. Just my two cents.

Not sure about Haffner just needed a suspect to write in my observation.
