I believe that Red John is an idea cultivated by a group of ex-Visulaize members. I believe Bret Stiles created a rift within the starting of Visualize and a vigilante group broke way to prove Bret Stiles wrong in some way. I do not see Bret Stiles killing anyone, but more remorseful of what has happened. So I believe Red John is an ideal more than a person or at least not a solitary person.
I think there are more RedJohn Followers than we're lead to believe.

I have a theory based on some notes

In fact:
In S05E05 "Red Dawn"
-alexa shultz with Robert Kirkland (in Limo) ask Virgil Minelli vie phone to keep her in loop about Red John's case.
in other scene:
Robert Kirkland is a "friend" of Gale bertram -may be just for work- anyway they both ask Teresa Lisbon if jane mad a progress on Red john case.
In S06E02
-in the meeting between 3 suspects : Gale bertram , Reed smith and Sheriff thomas mccalister, Reed ask Gale how jane is close with little authoritarian Voice.
Now we have two cases:
1) Robert Kirkland , Gale bertram and Reed smith cooperate with the aim of finding Red John before Patrick Jane find him.
In that event, that let us think that may Raymond haffner or sheriff Thomas mccalister is Red John and is protected and invested somehow by Bret stiles.
2) Robert Kirkland is himself Red John and helped sometimes by his team Gale bertram , Reed smith and Bret stiles of course due to the fact that he was involved in "Visualize" and "the farm".
I hope that those things make a sense , and i think all fans and participants for their nice theories.
I 'll start by saying that theories about Patrick Jane are completely unfounded and ridiculous , Bruno Heller say several times that it was not and could not be PATRICK JANE !

We also note that Bruno Heller confirms that THE suspect in the list of Jane .So what theories like all members of the list would be involved is wrong.
I also found an interview with Jack Plotnick (Actor Brett Patridge ) who says that we often see in Season 6 , or he dies in the first episode. So it would seem that he must return to the other episodes .....

My theory is that Brett Patridge is not dead and he is Red John . He would fake his death so that Patrick Jane can no longer accuse him.
Brett PArtridge would be the only plausible option for being RED JOHN! I've been reviewing some of the suspects & come across Ray Haffner, we saw in an earlier episode i dont remember which one. But Patricks shows disrespect to Brett Partridge & later gets kidnapped by some kids where red john comes to save him in the end & then spooks patrick just the way he did it. [It was the episode with the camera stuff]. Then if we review the first episode with Ray Haffner [Little red book] Patricks keeps avoiding & tricking Ray, which would bother red john, but red john doesn't do a thing even though Patricks makes Bertram fire Ray haffner & that shows that Ray haffner hates Patricks but doesn't actually feel disrepected & act like red john did in the scene where Patricks disrespected Partridge. Therefor Partridge is red john not Haffner & the other 5 suspects doesn't fit the profile.
Before we watch the 7th episode, I'm sure someone will have pieced the identity together using photos/actors names/interviews released from the buildup and it'll be posted all over here. I think its time to start looking back and forward to look for hints for Jane's Plan. This is the one- Patrick will be reeling in Redjohn! Now this is going to be one hell of a plan, spanning over a number of episodes I hope, and one reveal I will NOT be disappointed by!
OR that episode is going to need a lot of action!!!

red john may be kristina frye
no one is expecting red john to be a woman, not even jane, but why not.
it's known that red john has many friends and people working for him. kristina may use one of her friends to talk to sophie miller.any of red john's friends would be kind of weird.
i don't think that red john is one of the seven suspect. i think that all of them work for red john, but none of them is really red john.
ow, red john has a male voice. well, that's easy to change with an eletronic device.
and, where the hell is kristina frye? she disappear, i think in season 2, and no one seems to care about her anymore. i think heller left her out of the history so no one remember her.and, before she went missing, she told jane that she is not afraid of red john, maybe because she is red john, or, at least, is a friend of him.
i don't think that red john ever appear commiting a crime on a scene in the show, or that is really him that Rosalind Harker known. it could be another friend of red john implanted to confuse jane, make him believe that red john is a man.
i know that exist many theories about who is red john, i have other theories too, but i think that kristina frye is definitely a suspect to consider.
