If the alleged reappearance of Kirkland (which could in fact be his twin brother) in 6.6 happens to be a flashback, it could turn out to be screenshots of incidents narrated by Jane revealing one of his tricks to trap a suspect. If that is the case, here's a plausible scenario.

Between the time when Hightower and Lisbon arrive to rescue Jane and the time when Kirkland is carted away, there is plenty of time for scheming. Jane and Kirkland both know that his life is probably in danger and they might not have time to discuss details of the TT organization.

So, Jane plants a bug on Kirkland. The final conversation between Kirkland and Smith is recorded. When Kirkland runs, he ditches the bug so that it wont be on his person when they examine his corpse.

If it does not happen in this way, then we have more information (crucial information) than Jane does at this point and Jane will have to learn the pertinent info on TT in some other way.

I have always suspected him.  After the 2nd episode this season with Lisbon in the hospital and the 1 on 1 Jane had with Kirkland last nite that mentioned someone who was persuasive and quasi-religious I am 90% sure that it is him.

The only other plausible explanation i can come up with now is Kirkland's twin brother.  Also lost in that 1 on 1 was were Kirkland mentioned that his brother was sadistic and twisted.  Loralei could have seen Kirkland and Jane together and not realized that the Kirklands were twins and assumed it was Red John.

I think the show was supposed to get over at season 3 itself after carter got killed. He did fit 'red john' description perfectly.

I think the plot after that season is all bull shit.
And also, the recent Mentalist episodes season 4 & 5 (those without red john) were very boring. Jane's logic and "his memory castle" not so impressive like the first 3 seasons.

I think personally we can bring that RJ suspect list from five to four, it's possible Reede Smith could still be RJ, but I find it unlikely in the fact RJ wouldn't expose himself like he did at the end of S6, episode 4 as RJ a lot of the time sends out his associates to clean up after him or do his dirty work.

Not to mention at the end of Season 4 in the episode The Crimson Hat, RJ tells PJ that he has a good friend in the FBI, as Smith is the only FBI agent on the RJ suspect list and we know know he is an associate in his network, it would stand to reason Smith is that friend.

First of all, I do not watch the Mentalist. I'm bored with a little bit of free time, so I'm willing to show anyone who meets me in the comments section who Redjohn is, with answers to all of your Redjohn plotholes. I've only ever watched 10-15 episodes and Youtube clips (all featuring Redjohn). This is a closed affair, I can't handle more than 5 people, so please make this implausible.

Tyger tyger, such a crazy show
now the story has no more flow.
What twisted hand or stupid mind,
could frame things so badly combined?
Tyger tyger, this show sucks!
Who's Red John? Who gives a fuck!

I think Bob Kirkland was smarter than Jane. At least he figured out the "tiger tiger" organisation before him.
And also Jane's list is dumb. Most of them doesn't match Rosalind's description.
