I remembered at that talk show with dr.steiner and patrick jane and im not sure now but was that show live? If not then Red John was in that show and dr.steiner died a few moments later and it didnt showed what patrick was doing after that show so it really could be Patrick Jane

I am going to begin by mentioning that I have watched every single episode of the mentalist to date. I have also been doing quite a fair bit of research to try and determine who RED JOHN is. And I must say sadly I am quite sure I know the answer with concrete evidence actually. Unless Bruno Heller decides to change his mind I have determied the serial Killer by a mistake that they have made.

If you look at the profile of the character Brett Patridge on imdb : <<http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0257474/>> you can see that he has only plated in 2 episodes. Looking back we have only ever seen Brett Partridge in ONE episode which was the pilot episode (episode 1).

According to the source, he also appeared in the episode ''Red Sky in the Morning'' which was the season finale of season 2. If you recall this was the episode when RED JOHN appeared with a mask and saved Patrick Jane from the hoaks killers. We had never seen Brett Patridge in that episode but according to the source he was there. This can only mean ONE THING. Brett Patridge actulally is Red John and he was the one under the mask.

This being said I am quite disappointed that I have been able to figure out the identity of Red John so easily not to mention that it in fact becomes quite boring because he isn't a main character as he barely appeared in the episodes.

Also let's mention that he wasn't on Larouche's list of suspects and as far as I know he and Jane never shook hands.

What do you guys think? I am pretty sure and disappointed in this finding.

While I'm naming Partridge as the ORIGINAL Red John, the truth is actually twofold...

Brett Partridge USED TO BE Red John. Bruno Heller has originally planned to have him as "just this simple man", to quote him, and has given too many clues to his identity. It was spoiled too early, and now he's had to change it.

Brett was John. Who is John now? Nobody. Bruce Heller doesn't know yet. Who is he going to be? We'll see at the end of the series and not before.

Bruno Heller still hasn't decided who Red John is going to be.

After everyone figured out his originally planned identity in Season 2 (some already in Season 1, after his character has been prominently placed next to Jane in the early promo posters), he's been egged and has switched strategies. Instead of being too self-congratulatory with giving out actual clues (which is why the original identity was spoiled so early), he's been backtracking ever since, planting tons of new fake "clues" everywhere he can, in hope of making every viewer suspect every character in the series.

It's working for about 95% of the viewers, Bruno's happy, and he'll be milking the red cow until cancellation is imminent. Then, with the hundreds of false clues that have been planted, he'll be able to pick literally anyone he wants, even at random (though most likely after checking the Mentalist wikia for current fan favorites), say "there, s/he's been Red John all along!" and point to whichever "clue" he wants as "proof".

Decent plan, which will probably work, and whoever he picks up for Red John will hopefully be satisfying. The show is still strong, nothing about it has been destroyed so far (unlike, say, "Dexter", blown up by the atrocity known as "Season 7"), and it will probably stay decent with Bruno Heller helming it (again, with "Dexter", it was the change of runners in Season 6 that destroyed the series). It's just a bit of a shame that he's so concerned with that trap he found himself in. Red John has grown into a monster, the whole series is about him, and without him/her, the series will fizzle out in 5 episodes - which Bruno Heller knows, and which is why he won't pick the "revelation" until the cancellation.

Frankly, I'd hope he'd return to the original identity, but that's past - he's accidentally made the character from what used to be his original roots (just a clever serial killer, operating alone or with a tiny group of accomplices) into this giant mythical Satan-like being with 5000 devoted johnologists standing by, and by now he probably feels that he'll need someone much bigger to fill those shoes. (Perhaps that's why a certain "bloke" from Yorkshire has been returning so often, though hopefully not.)

Unless he brings back the original RJ from Season 1/2 and retcons him into someone bigger. But that would be too obvious.

Let's take a look at some of the color symbolism in The Mentalist regarding RJ.

RJ's main color is obviously red with the smiley faces but his secondary color is yellow - remember the yellow flowers left with the naked corpse and at Dr. Morning's office where Hicks was found dead in His Right Red Hand.  If RJ has another color, it's orange.  Tigers are orange and RJ is the tiger in William Blake's poem.

Recall that RJ has been known as Roy.  It could be that he chose that name as a stand in for the colors Red, Orange, Yellow - ROY.  If RJ claims the first three colors of the visible spectrum, that leaves Jane with GBIV - green, blue, indigo, and violet.  I would say that Jane is blue and Lisbon might be green.  I won't even try to guess what colors the rest of the team is.

Color is definitely important.  Take Lorelei for example: when we first met her, she was wearing bright red but the last we saw of her in Red Sails in the Sunset, she was wearing a nice yellow dress.  Lorelei is moving closer to Jane's colors in the visible light spectum as he lures her away from RJ.  It would be interesting if she ended up wearing green/blue when she finally chooses to help Jane.

And as far as the suspects go,  Mashburn is the only one that is constantly surrounded by the colors yellow and red.

When Jared Renfrew is killed in the Mexico motel, the whole team is in the office. So, it cannot be Cho, Van Pelt, Lisbon, Minelli or Rigsby. And Red John always needs to be a two steps ahead of Jane and he needs to be in control. So, he wouldn't Jane to hypnotize him. Minelli is hypnotized by Jane to stop smoking. Lisbon is hypnotized to find out the reason for her blackout. Rigsby is hypnotized on S0118. Cho had a gang life in his past and Van Pelt believes Jane is psychic. But Red John doesn't believe he is a Psychic. He thinks Jane is a fake.

I Accuse:
Patrick Jane's Father
1. We do not know what happened to him. Is he alive or dead?
2. How did he react to Patrick running away from his carny life? i.e with his meal ticket gone for good how did he feel really?
3. He liked to make money using his son. He is mean, greedy and has no empathy(mark of a sadistic serial killer). Per S0303, Patrick ran away with his wife and left the carny life. But later Patrick makes helluva lot of money and may be that pissed his father off because he isn't able to be a part of that rich Jane's life.
4. Lorelei says he is more like Jane. So, this can mean either his father or Jane himself (It cannot be jane as she also states she wonders why he and Red John did not become friends the day they shook their hand and Jane has met him.
5. As pointed out by the other user ASM89, I agree with the Tiger Tiger reference and with RJ being a showman.
