Heller anticipated that viewers would eliminate suspects one by one as they are being featured in each shows. So he plays a game and features McAllister early and uses a dramatic moment where the sheriff rescues PJ from a tall height. Viewers conclude he cannot be the suspect because RJ is afraid of heights and because he rescues PJ.

However,.....

Heller has assured us that it is one of the 7 (well, now 5)

RJ could easily have PJ dead but keeps him alive. So too does McAllister with his rescue
RJ would not show the outward antagonism towards PJ that Stiles, Haffner, Smith and Bertram. The only suspect that seems to be friendly with Janes is McAllister
A hillbilly Sheriff seems so distant to a sophisticate like RJ but that's what makes it interesting
We have been 'conditioned' to hate the Visualize cult so anyone associated with it is unlikely to be the 'real' RJ
Stiles is missing so he is too obviously being dangled as a 'likely' subject
Bertram is too uninteresting a choice since he would the be tangled up in the banal 'conspiracy at the CBI top' and this might disappoint viewers. Bertram, Haffner can then be crossed off

He is MAR
He is McAllisteR
Root of the verb to mar meaning to scar, impair.
Tom MAR: the one who scars, the red smiley face.
Jared Renfrew had information about Red John which he got from Orville Tanner when they shared the same jail cell.
MAR is a possible nickname for McAllister, or Red John.  Something that people referred to him during his childhood which
was continued into his early years of a murderer.

From a recent interview:

"I was surprised, and had I been Red John, I would have been equally surprised," she said.Robin, who plays Senior Special Agent Teresa Lisbon on the show, admitted she was kept in the dark until the episode.

To me, this tells me that (assuming the list of 7 is genuine) RJ is somebody who is not a usual suspect or a creepy or 'bad' guy. It seems like Bertrum fits somebody who would suprise both Lisbon and the actor playing Bertrum. Stiles would surprise neither. Haffner would surprise neither. Mcallister neither. (Remember, Robin is referring to her shock during the actual episode of the reveal, so given the first 5 episodes, Haffner or Sherrif or even Smith would come a no surprise to her). It must be either Bertrum, or perhaps Partridge (which would certainly surprise both of them!).

Or perhaps Robin is just being coy to the media, which is on second thoughts more likely. What do you think?

Spoiler Alert: Tom Mccallister is Red John.

The Red John Story: He grew up with an abusive father living with his family in a rural area, surrounded with wildlife.  Became fascinated with hunting animals as an outlet for the pain who his Father was inflicting on him at home.  He became involved with Visualize during his later years (17-22) and soon furthered his connections to people who were obsessed with pain, like himself.  His first public murder came at the Visualize farm when he was about 24 or 25 which is where he adopted the red smiley face.  He then began partnering with other troubled people which he connected with through his time at visualize.  His first accomplice was Orville Tanner someone that had a similar background as him, growing up in a small rural town. (similar to the town in Season 3 Episode 9 "Red Moon", also the character Todd Johnson's childhood was very similar to Red John and Orville Tanner.)   After Orville Tanner was arrested, Mcallister thought out a position of power in order to disguise his new identity and help prevent him from meeting the same fate as his partner.  Sheriff was the perfect position for him because it kept him in a rural area somewhere he is very familiar with.  This way he can hide in the shadows while committing high-scale murders between long intervals of time.  He became even more obsessed with the famous character that had become which is around the time he killed Jane's family after hearing Jane mock in on television.
I believe his identity still remains unknown to both members of visualize and the tyger tyger group however both of these people know that Red John was once or is currently associated with their group.

Similarities-
Red John and Tom Mcalister are both left handed, but shoot their gun with their right hand. (Red John is a very good marksman much like Mcalister, which is due to his hunting background.... He began killing people with knives, his weapon of choice and developed his gun skills from shooting animals)
They both enjoy drinking tea and wear the same pointed cowboy boots.
They both have phobias (heights and partridges) Partridges are especially important because they are used as symbolism in the first 3 episodes of season 3.

In the season 2 finale Red John saves Jane's life by shooting the copycat killers and in episode 3 of season six Tom Mcallister does the same thing by shooting the man taking Jane hostage.  This similarity was used by Bruno Heller on purpose to subtly built Jane and Red John's relationship as protagonist and antagonist.

AND IF YOU STILL DONT BELIEVE ME GO AND WATCH THE PROMO TO SEASON 6 EPISODE 6 AND PAUSE IT WHEN YOU SEE THE SUSPECTS REACTIONS TO JANE POINTING HIS GUN AND TELLING THEM THAT ONE OF THEM IS RED JOHN.  Everyone is on the edge on their seat with looks of confusion and surprise while Tom Mcallister is completely comfortable in the same power stance seen in season 6 episode 2 when Jane tell Bertram, Reede Smith and Mcallister that Red John has made a mistake. (His hat is in his hand, legs crossed, head tilted).

Finally! They said his name! I didn't want to get into some vague discription of who I was talking about but I always suspected him. Ron! And to now here that his name is Ron; the combination of Red and John.

That side, while I've been watching the seasons, I've always noticed that one 'extra' who seemed to continuously show up in the background or a walk by at the CBI. Other cop extras would come and go but why would you bother maintaining one background character from the very begining. He has access to everything and everyone. Now very recently he has actually had a speaking part and had Jane call him out in the hallway. If they wanted to even rub it in our face more, when Lisbon was just attacked by Red John, Ron just rounded the corner after speaking with Jane when Red John called Jane. Could have been a time laps between the attack and the call, could have been someone else that attacked Lisbon posing as/for Red John since the attack didn't follow his MO. Maybe Partridge was attacked because he was on the list, or maybe he was attacked because he himself had actually found out something. He always has had an interest in the Red John case and he might have stubbed on to something if not about Red John himself but about the Tiger Tiger club.

I know this is not a name on the list of 7 and Bruno Heller has said we can believe in the list, but that doesn't mean Red John is on the list. It just means the list has meaning in the catching of Red John. All of the people on the list are connected to RJ or the Tiger Tiger club or the catching of RJ. Jane has been smart enough to make a fake list of Red John suspects before for other eyes to discover, why not another one?

Lastly, one of the writers once compared to the search of Red John as a game of 'where's Waldo'. Rod has always be tucked into background shots or wide angle office shots. You could easily call it a game of 'Where's Ron'

Once they realise that Red John's full name is Red Johnathan, they can sit back and have a laugh.
