What if it's Grace's FATHER???!! I'm starting from the fact that every show has RED in the title. The only member of the team associated with Red is Van Pelt (hair). She is, however, too young to be Red John- and I think RJ is a man, so.... Van Pelt is the daughter of a football coach (from the midwest?) but what if she was adopted and never told?
Now one question flowing from this is does she know that RJ is her father? That could go either way...
If she DOES know, then she is working with him and is the mole inside CBI (shows up after Jane, in Pilot).
If she DOESN'T know, then RJ could be stalking her just as much as Jane...
Who knows!? One question to ask- what is MOST different between the case they investigate in the pilot and the one they investigate BEFORE the show has begun? (its safe to assume the Team investigated a case before the pilot episode, right?!) The introduction of Grace VanPelt to the unit. Her entrance is the start of the show.
(Either that, or Patrick Jane has an evil twin brother! ; ) )

Red John is Dr. Steiner...I had thought it was him for a while, but wasn't sure until he asked Jane to witness his death. It has to be an older male, of average but not athletic size, who came to the C.B.I. after Jane did. It has to be someone higher than average intelligence with medical knowledge. It has to be someone close enough to Jane to keep track of him, but not close enough that Jane could accidentally pick up on who he really is. It has to be someone noone would ever suspect, and how could anyone suspect the man that Patrick Jane himself witnessed dying? In the episode that Dr. Steiner dies, he makes a point to tell Jane that he doesn't want to be on the autopsy table. Of course not, that would actually kill him. They never actually showed him taking pills to overdose, so noone knows what he actually took. So being a doctor he would know how to fake his own death. I could continue, but let's see the theory so far get broke down first....

There's no way that Jane is Red John, I respect other opinions but it's dumb to say it's him. Remember in the very first episode, we see Jane’s past in a flashback. The whole series bases on that event that happened 5 years from where we were then. We feel truly sorry for Jane, his loss and the guilt he’s living with every day, so why would Heller base his series on such a big lie? It wouldn’t make sense to reveal Jane to be Red John because that would change everything we (the viewers) believed in for the past seasons. We root for Jane to catch his nemesis and to finally get the revenge he has been looking for since the day his family was murdered.
PS: and also the RJ's letter to Jane:
"Dear mister Jane, I do not like to be slandered in the media, especially by a dirty money-grubbing fraud. If you were a real psychic, instead of a dishonest little worm, you wouldn't need to open the door to see what I've done to your lovely wife and child."
Would Jane write it to himself, stick it on the door, go out to his tv show then talk about himself (as Red John) , return to his house and read the letter he wrote himself and open the door to see what really happened to his wife and daughter ?

I think that Red John is Kristina Frye mainly because I get very weird vibes from her. When Red John "kidnapped" her and she was "dead" that made me think she defiantly had something to do with it. She "talked" to Patricks wife and told him that his daughter never woke up. I also think that she is a fraud and knew that his daughter didn't wake up because she was there.

My only argument is the phrase "Roll Tide" that Red John said to Jane at the final of season 2, how could he know it if she isn't Kristina Frye herself ?...they both only knew it.

Before Bertram is exonerated from the charge of being the mole he meets Lisbon in his office (without Jane, take note); look this images:

After Jane says that Bertram isn't involved with Red John. It's not a mole.
Timothy Carter must pretend to be him RJ. And he's believed RJ untile 4x01's end.
But there's a strange link to Bertram visible only after several visions of the episode:

Why Carter reads (probably) a newspaper of previous day? The same of Bertram? Maybe in the news are writed the informations on Jane's family. And was made to disappear and destroyed by Ron Deutsch, the security guard.
IN THE MENTALIST NOTHING IS PLACED AT RANDOM
When Gale Bertram says or does something suspicious, PJ is absent (poetry, tea, journal).

Following the logic: Bertram it's involved with RJ, in some way.
Is he a mole? I don't know. Is he Red John himself? Maybe. Certainly he's a strong suspect.
