LATEST THEORIES

       I believe red john  is Virgil  Minelli for a couple of reasons.

            First, when Virgil  gives Patrick Laroche's suspect  list(or so he claims ),

               of Red John's connection, he says it was through mysterious  and underground methods.   Secondly,  as Virgil talks on the phone  with FBI director Alexa Schultz,  she mentions how good it is to have a friend in the FBI,

                                                    the same statement that  Red John mentions to Jane from the backseat of the limo.   I think Virgil is the man.

Judge Manchester has all the required attributes, and he is played by and actor called John "Rubi"nstein, has previously acted alongside Simon Baker and was in Red Dragon ( as well as writing the tyger, William Blake produced several works featuring the Red Dragon ). All a bit tenuous I agree but Judge Manchester is also an anagram of "Get Janes Red Chum"!

I think Walter Mashburn is the most likely to be Red John. He has money, power and connections (to get into the CBI network for example). Jane has been told a couple of times that they are very much alike (by Rebecca and Lorelai): they're both charming and manipulative. They shook hands too.

The clues given are the followings:
1)Red John is most likely a man;
2)He appears to be a Caucasian, and is a white person as described by Haley:
3)Red John has an average height: Rosalind described him as "just under 6 feet tall";
4)Red John has short straight hair (as described by Rosalind Harker);
5)Red John either has or puts on an odd, high pitched and soft voice;
6)Red John should be older than 30 years (since his murders date back to the 90's).

1)Mashburn is a man.
2)Mashburn is Caucasian and white.
3)Mashburn has an average height.
4)Mashburn has short straigt hair.
5)Mashburn has a soft voice.
6)Mashburn is older than 30 years.

Also, in 1x11 Renfrew writes on a wall "He is Ma" with his own blood just before getting killed by Red John. The last letter is not clear, but it could be a "s".
John seems to have an interest in Lisbon too, in fact he asks Jane for her head in the season 4 finale; in 3x07 Mashburn sleeps with Lisbon.

If Walter Mashburn is not Red John, then my alternative is Virgil Minelli.

A few reasons to think why:

Dr. Steiner, although "dead", should be a prime suspect for Red John. Sure you'd have to get around the fact that Patrick witnessed him dying, and yes there are a lot of theories about his death being faked, so moving forward with these thoughts we will have to at least assume  that is a possibility.

Dr. Steiner fits the profile of what Red John is Like physically, as well as his proven mental capacity. Of course if he really was he may not show just how smart his around Patrick so as not to create to much suspicion.

He also was not included on the List of suspects that Patrick wrote down after Lorelei made the comment about her being surprised that Red John and Patrick didn't become friends after they had shaken hands.

For anyone curious Patrick's current suspect list is as follows:
Ellis Mars
Dean Harken
Jason Cooper
Walter Mashburn
Vint Molinari
Dr. Linus Wagner
Virgil Minnelli (who is my second choice personally for being Red John as he also fits all the other pieces)
Dr. Towlen Morning
Osvaldo Ardiles

That being said clearly Steiner is not present on this list which gives him a perfect cover but only time will tell.

The biggest thing that led me to Steiner however was in season 3 during the episode in which he dies. After he makes the phone call about having the body him and Jane start talking. Steiner brings up Lisbon and asks Jane if they will let her in on the secret. Jane tells him in time, which (I don't remember the exact phrase of the comments) Steiner makes another remark and then makes this comment:

"She reminds me of... well never mind"

No further comments happen after that.

It may be considered a stretch, but since it happens as a passing comment and is never brought back up, I think it's fair to say that it as a slip of the tongue with a reference to Jane's wife. I understand the Red John would have never really have met Jane's wife, but I think that there is a possibility that this is true, especially considering some other comments about Jane and Lisbon in recent episodes. For instance Lorelei's

"I think you're just a little bit in love with Theresa Lisbon".

This is a working theory and I'm not sold on the idea, however after rewatching season 3 and seeing this episode makes me wonder.

If all else fails here my vote is Virgil Minnelli

"Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright..."
http://www.bartleby.com/101/489.html

We all know this is the William Blake poem quoted by Red John to Jane.

It has also already been mentioned that the poem quoted by Bertram in "Red Queen" is a Blake poem called The Cradle Song.

To add to this connection, both poems were originally published by Blake in 1794 in the same collection, entitled Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience.

The verse from The Cradle right before "when thy little heart doth wake..." (quoted by Bertram) is: "O the cunning wiles that creep / In thy little heart asleep!".  RJ/Bertram knows exactly who the real mole is (O'Laughlin), so the line implies that he is amused by the wiles of Jane in helping Hightower escape.

Lastly, this might be silly, but if you go to the link above at bartleby.com for the text of The Tiger, and then hit next, [to go to Blake's next poem in their archive], The Cradle is the very next poem...
