Red John

Rosalind Harker's description- Just under 6ft tall, short straight hair, not muscular but not soft with strong hands. He smelled of Pine, Nails and Earth. His favourite music was Bach.

Sophie Miller's description- Acrophobia, Middle aged, good health, no living family but lots of friends, well spoken, good posture, self possessed, sat calmly and he is an excellent whistler. Wasn't sure whether Acrophobia was the real issue.

Red John's first kill was in 1988.
When Red John killed Jared Renfrew he left a clue that said something like HE IS MAR

The 5 suspects left
Raymond Haffner-Height-6ft-Age-46(21)
Ray Haffner first appeared in 4x02 after Lisbon's team was split up. Ray is an expert in wiretaps and surveillance techniques similar to what Red John used in 1x23. In this episode Ray and his team worked with Jane. He asks Cho if he is smarter than Jane, he is actually seen shaking Jane's hand and he taps Cho on the shoulder like when RJ did it to Jane(2x23) In the end Jane outsmarts Haffner and catches the killer without him. Bertram has no choice but to reinstate the team. This leaves Haffner angry and its not like the Red John that always outsmarts Jane.

In "The Red Barn" it is revealed that Haffner is a member of visualize who have a strong connection to Red John. Jane discovers Red Johns first kill and is later revealed Haffner was at the farm back in 1988 making him 21. This is where Lisbon suspects him more than anyone as Red John.

Season 6-Excellent whistler, arachnophobia, Warns Lisbon that Jane could get her hurt. This is another scene which shows he cares about her, probably more than any of the other suspects and that's interesting because Red John let Lisbon live and now its not just Jane he has spared. When Haffner is at Janes house he tries to get away which I don't think Red John would try. He was also sat up and he didn't seem calm like Red John would be. Doesn't have a 3 dot tattoo.

At the start of the season he was definitely one of the favourites but after the latest episode I have pulled away from him being Red John. Even Lisbon suggested he was scared about going to Janes house.

Reede Smith-Height-6ft2-age 37(12)
Reede Smith is the least likely to be Red John with his size not matching, his build not matching, his first kill would have been 12 which I couldn't of saw happening and he is the only suspect I haven't heard whistle. Despite this he is on the list, he is afraid of heights, he is part the Tyger Tyger conspiracy so he has the 3 dot tattoo and he keep a really good straight face(6x04).The way he has acted with Jane suggests he is not Red John because he tried to accuse Jane of killing someone that Kirkland killed and he tried to shoot Jane in his house while the real Red John would have been more relaxed and we know Red John doesn't want to kill Jane anyway. When we first meet Reede Smith he starts a fight with Cho and when I looked back at this I thought if he is Red John it will be a disaster. Even though there is very little chance of him being Red John he is probably Red Johns FBI friend who is still yet to be revealed.

Gale Bertram-Height-6ft3 Age-51(26)
Gale Bertram is one of the strongest suspects to be Red John as he is the right age, he drinks tea, quoted the William Blake poem, has the 3 dot tattoo, called Jane boy wonder which is what his father used to call him and he is the head of the CBI giving him a lot of power. The season 3 finale was around the time I started to suspect Bertram especially in the mall when he hinted the word "rope" to make Jane think the assassin was going down a floor to O'Laughlin's room and O'Laughlins phone led to Timothy Carter which put Jane in prison. That is how smart Red John is and that is the type of thing you expect from him, Jane was too focused on other things to see the truth. On the latest episode Bertram was one of the only suspects to be sat calm at Janes house and he eager to be there. Bruno Heller hinted that a clue would be in 6x01 and if it's 666 it only links to Bertram from the suspect list. Not everything points to Bertram though because of Rosalind's description it makes me second guess myself. She said Red John was under 6ft and Bertram is 6ft3. Also Bertram is bald but because it was in the past he maybe had hair then or he simply wore a wig. Bertram has now been on two lists involving Red John maybe this time he is the odd one out and the way he looked Jane shows possibly shows the monster within.

Bret Stiles- Height-5ft8 Age-70(45)
Bret Stiles with Gale Bertram are the most believable suspects to be Red John. Bret Stiles is the leader of huge brainwashed cult who will do anything for him. He is the only suspect that seems to outsmart Jane and read people like Jane. Bret Stiles is a tea drinker(3x03), in that same episode Bret Stiles got someone to kill for him just like how Red John gets people to kill for him, he is seen riding in a limo just like RJ's when he goes to meet Jane to give him information about RJ. On 4x16 the way Bret Stiles brainwashed Van Pelt was exactly like how Red John manipulates women like Lorelei and Rebecca. There is no way any of the other suspects could get them to be so loyal, its not like the tyger tyger group where they all stick together Lorelei and Rebecca wasn't a part of that but they stayed so loyal. Bret Stiles always has time for Jane which is what you would expect if he is Red John. Another thing I found weird was in season 3 Red John never killed anyone and that was the season Bret Stiles went away for awhile. In season 6 Bret Stiles was the first to arrive at Janes house and he was fairly calm throughout apart from when Jane revealed Red John was in the room which he found interesting. All these points are good for Bret Stiles being RJ but there are some huge points that make it hard to believe its him. Bret Stiles is 70 years old and he is dying, Sophie described Red John as being middle aged and healthy so if Red John went to see her we can straight away say no to Red John being Stiles but it depends whether you think it was Red John who saw her. Bret Stiles is may favourite character out of the 5 suspects and I think he would play a good Red John but now that we know he doesn't have a tattoo it once again depends on whether you think Red John killed the PI or it was the tyger tyger group trying to find out how much Jane knows. If Red John never saw Sophie and he never killed the PI, I would say Bret Stiles is a strong suspect.

Sheriff Thomas McAllister- Height-6ft Age-50s(late 20s-early 30s) Unsure on his actual age
It's hard to believe the sheriff from the second episode would be in the final 5 suspects but on his return in season 6 he is becoming a stronger suspect. He is the right height and his age is right, he is part of the tyger tyger conspiracy and he is one of the many whistlers. One of the things that stood out with accusing the sheriff was that when Red John poisoned Rebecca he had a sheriff outfit and you couldn't see someone like Stiles wearing the outfit. McAllister has always shown an interest in Jane and even saved his life up on the roof of the church which is something Red John has already done. There was no problems getting him to go to Janes house. The two times we have saw him sat down he has been sat calmly. Originally McAllister seemed to have a fear of heights until he saved Jane but maybe Red John hasn't got acrophobia because it is unclear what his real phobia is. The sheriff has probably got the best shot out of the suspects and Red John probably needed a good shot in the season 2 finale because with a mask on in the dark it made the shots harder to pull off. Jane has made nearly all the suspects look like fools, it happened to McAllister on the second episode when Jane constantly beat him at rock, paper and scissors. The HE IS MAR clue could mean HE IS MCALLISTER but I don't get why Jared would just write the name of Red John so HE IS and a name makes no sense. I think you could say Bret Stiles saved McAllisters life when Jane saw the sheriff had the tattoo but I don't get why Bret Stiles would do that if he was Red John. After McAllister told Jane he wasn't Red John he seemed convincing but whether Jane will think so is another question.

If Red John is none of the 5 it has to be Michael Kirkland especially with Daniel Cerone confirming that Red John is on Janes list.

Wow @ the TV Guide reveal, and not in a good way. I can't believe they just made all that public. He's on the list and the actor thought he'd been a red herring. Stiles, anyone?

This show is just so poorly written it's quite incredible they managed to gatue suxh an audience.

So there's going to be zero inventiveness, twist or originality to the end of one if the longer sagas in recent television. Thanks, Heller, bang up job.

This is just an idea I'd like to throw out there, but I keep thinking RJ holds too much ongoing interest in PJ for it just to have been sparked by a tv appearance that offended. I think there may be some connection to PJ's dad, so how about PJ has an unknown sibling? (Or similar childhood rival that PJ didn't even realize was a rivalry). His father didn't exactly seem the most honorable & responsible man. Maybe PJ was better at making the money, the other child was abandoned (or ignored, unclaimed, etc), leaving him/her (likely male, yes, but not definite), with lifelong bitterness toward PJ, & a STRONG DESIRE TO TAKE FROM PJ JUST AS PJ "took" (the father's attention) FROM HIM.
Also, most important, a lifelong driving need to PROVE TO ALL (HIMSELF, PJ, & THEIR FATHER-dead or alive) THAT HE (RJ) IS THE BEST, BRIGHTEST, ETC, NOT ----PJ----. If RJ did build up the three dotted tattoo (that tattoo was meant to be seen by victim, normal clothes cover it, only a tank top would show it--off) tyger-tyger organization, again, proof he is the best, better than PJ at it all. PJ confesses his lies after family deaths, tries to make right, etc. Joins law enforcement (even if began as selfish, he helps many), now RJ shows he can not just join (did he?), but can amass a secret organization thru the highest branches (CBI, FBI, HOMELAND, etc) successfully. RJ seems to never want to leave PJ's life. He is beyond obsessed. I think RJ is more obsessed than PJ is. There is an interesting idea, WHY?
Childhood can dig deep needs that cannot be reasonably filled later. There are an awful lot of questions about the carnival, about PJ's past, his dad, all that, left unanswered. Red herring? Sure, possible. But what a crazy ass denoumont (sp?) that would be, right? If the family from the past angle came back, it would SHOCK PJ. (Maybe Kirkland's story of his childhood begins the reintroduction into old pasts coming back)
& others have mentioned the Barlows (I think that was the name in the carnival community associated with psychics, yes? Anyway, what if there is a half sibling by PJ dad who is born of a Barlow? What if all those years back, there was a sibling (as postulated above), that actually WAS psychic or something, but because PJ could "sell" it better, the dad chose him as favorite. & some within carnival community resented that treatment of another child, thus the comment quoted in another theory about "only Barlows being real psychics" or something like that.
It just seems RJ has taken many unnecessary risks by staying so very involved with PJ's life all these years. Must be driven by something. He already 'won' by taking PJ's wife & child.
Ok, I am no expert on this, just had a thought & wanted to share. One more thing. I know "Red John" is probably self-given nickname. But when writing RJ & PJ over & over, same last initial. Prob means nothing. Maybe RJ is trying to force PJ to remember --& confront within himself-- the possibility that another child existed & suffered as PJ got the adoration of the father. PJ then threw away his fathers attentions, which would only further enrage one who had coveted & been denied those very attentions.
One more thing, I agree something is strange about recent explanation by Bob Kirkland re: his own motive & how much he spends on talking in detail about a father & twin & how awful it all was. Makes sense RJ came from either sadistic or less than loving home. & I'm not convinced Bob is dead. Probably, but poss of bullet proof vest? I know, that's reaching :). Just interesting he is/was a twin (could he suspect his twin became RJ & feels duty bound to end it bc he never did get his "close" twin out of the dad's house?), he was a twin & in many ways PJ & RJ have become flip sides of a coin?
Btw, Rosalind's word is taken too much as truth, & even if she is telling the truth as she knows it, there are many ways a woman can pretend to be a man in bed & successfully trick someone (it CAN happen), plus they never really LIVED together, which would make it easier to fake. & there are plenty of redheads in the show, esp women. With Irish background, could there have been a red headed mommy back in the day? & Stiles is white haired now, what was he 20 yrs ago, he already has a (real?Faked?) accent from the same island (British & Irish) , etc. I do think there is some crazy strange attachment between Stiles & PJ that PJ is unaware of.
Ok, sorry so long. Just some ideas. Please tear them apart, I'm interested in anyone's ideas. I wonder if we all looked closer at the tyger poem, if it would help more.

RJ's voice "i don't like cheap imitations of my work" when he saved PJ is 200% that of Plotnick (partrige) it's the same vocal timber in the criminal minds promo S06E07 the gatekeeper.

Either he is RJ, or heller used his voice like others too, to keep RJ's identity secret.

i don't think BP is RJ,

the CBS had something to do with the appearence of plotnick as a serial killer in another show to please partrige fans,, but i think its way not enough for those who really believed that he was and still is RJ.

So I have a theory on the 7 suspects on Jane's list.  Why does he choose these 7 people?  What's so special about them?  I believe some are on the list because they are suspects, while others are merely accomplices.

Brett Stiles.  Jane thinks he's an accomplice.  He's never shaken hands with Jane, but Brett has always hinted that he knows RJ's identity.  We know there's a connection to visualize.  Jane puts him on the list because he believes Stiles will either willingly or unwillingly help him reveal RJ.

Gale Bertram.  He's an accomplice.  Jane knows he doesn't fit Rosalind's description of under six feet with short straight hair, but the man is in on it.  He's the director of the CBI and basically owns the Red John case.  He's always telling Jane "I wanna be there when you reveal Red John".

Ray Haffner.  He was a suspect, and a damn good one.  But he ain't RJ.  I don't believe he's actually involved.

Reede Smith.  He's an accomplice.  Jane never shakes hands with him, but RJ states in season 4, "...luckily I have a friend in the FBI".  Jane has deduced  that Reede is his FBI accomplice.

Bob Kirkland.  He was a suspect, but Jane discovers he was merely hunting RJ... oh and he's dead now.

Brett Partridge.  He ain't RJ, cuz he's dead, but he's very important!  What does he do for a living? Forensics!  Where do we always see him?  RJ crime scenes.  He's the guy who cleans up after RJ.  He makes sure no evidence can lead to him.  This is why Red John kills him.  Partridge knows vital clues and information that in Jane's hands, could identify RJ.

Sheriff Mcallister.  He's a sheriff in wine country.  Not much to contribute as an accomplice.  Not much jurisdictional prowess.  Therefore he has to be a suspect.  As I mentioned previously, they do not physically shake hands, but Jane and Tom play rock paper scissors, where-in you shake your hand repeatedly before revealing either rock, paper or scissors.  Therefore, they "shook" hands.  He's a hunter and as he tells Patrick, he knows how to "clean and quarter a kill".

Incidentally, what do hunters always do to their prey after they shoot it?  They cut the throat and let it bleed out.  What does RJ do to all his victims?  He cuts their throat and watches the life leave their eyes.  Plus, the knife RJ uses is quite possibly a hunting knife.  Take a look at this scene where he saves Patrick.  First he shoots a victim, then he slits her throat.  Plus the knife certainly looks like a hunting knife for quartering and cleaning a kill.
