i have a few theories who it may be
Patrick's Dad
Van Pelt
or Patrick himself :((((((((((((((((((((

first of all in season 1 there is an episode in which jane has flashbacks of his dad, his dad is a conman. it is stated that jane is much like red john, father and sons are alike? also it is clear janes dad probably did resent him as he wanted to make a success of the skills jane has but as you see in the flashbacks jane doesn't want to do what his dad wants him to do. Perhaps the only way his dad could feel powerful is by becoming this serial killer, now he is equal to jane and has had revenge.

Van Pelt is not red john but i think she could be his daughter or something (obviously then i doubt jane is red john if she is linked):
1) you never know much about her throughout the show
2) she believes in psychics so maybe she believes in red john, who is much like a powerful psychic or something
3) red john would have to have some computer knowledge, van pelt is the one always in control of the computer, so she clearly has this knowledge, when there has been messages sent through she probably knows how to do that.
4)She is the new one, perhaps she wanted to join to gain inside knowledge on jane, also she stopped relationship with Rigsby perhaps if she was closer that what mean risking being found out.
 hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

finally we have Patrick Jane
I REALLY REALLY REALLY HOPE IT'S NOT HIM I WILL BE SO UPSET
I'll keep this short but i guess he may have a split personality as jane does share a lot of traits similar to red john.
or perhaps he was once the red john but someone else has now taken over?
i'm not really sure and i try to not think it will be Jane but i really feel like it will be linked with him in someway.

People, people, people . . . is naivety flavor of the month ? Have a
week off, will you ?  Kirkland appears, says "Thank you" with a sissy
voice and you are all sure he is RJ.  Now Haffner admits he is a
Visualize member and about the right age - and you are all prepared to
bet everything you own on him being RJ.  Who ever is a guest in that
single February episode, you will accuse him.  Can't you see that they
are messing with you, and it's so easy for them ?! To make your life
much easier, I will say it again :

IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE THAT OBVIOUS ! ! !

I'm
glad that last episode gave us some important facts, and the most
important to me is that those 10 names we saw in Jane's book - that's
not the final list, but only the beginning. And I've always believed that none of them is RJ. Jane eliminated a lot of names, including those he had brief encounters with, but never saw or heard again.

Other
important info, about RJ being a "kid" in 1988 . . . finally and
without a doubt excludes Partridge from being RJ. But I guess, there
will always be some of you pointing the finger right at him.

Also,
in this last episode, Lisbon tells Haffner that only Jane and herself
knew about Cooper sending files to CBI. That's not true. While leaving
Visualize hq, she phones GVP and tells her that they will be sending
files on Elliston farm. But when she arrived at Visualize, Haffner
called her to set up that lunch and he was right in front of her office.
He might've stuck around and got the info from GVP about Visualize
sending files to CBI. And at the end, he confirmed to Lisbon that he is a
Visualize member. But I have a feeling that he covered for GVP, because
she is also connected to Visualize and is a great asset to them, being a CBI member.

We've
seen RJ a couple of times so far, and he is at least 45 years old.
Personally, I would say he is 50-55 years old now, with 55 being the
upper limit, according to Jane. And he is someone who was not "In your
face" so far in the show, but someone who is almost forgotten by the
viewers.

It would be awesome if RJ is someone you would never
ever think of, like that show host from the Jane's flashback in the
pilot. Dude appears again in 5x01, presenting a check at the end of the
episode. He is an undeveloped character, but it would be mind-blowing if
they choose someone like that, who slipped under everybody's radar. I will look for those kind of characters.

To
sum up - I love how the show has become darker, I love that we finally
have new RJ facts, and I love how they finished Red barn. Make fans go
crazy until February 17th, and then let Jane give them some big names.
You bastards !  :)

I think Jane already knows who Red John is but does not have enough proof yet and does not want to scare him away and that everything to have happened up to now was just acting to get closer to him.  I think the scene where Van Pelt opens up to Stiles was staged and is just meant to tempt Red John to approach her.

I think that maybe Red John is not a member of Visualize, but he wants Jane to believe he is (maybe he even wants to mislead Jane into going after Bret Stiles specifically, either because he would obviously make such a good suspect, or maybe because Red John has some personal issues with Stiles and Visualize that he cannot solve by simply killing them).

I think that we just don't know why yet. Maybe Visualize (or Stiles) has taken some relative of Red John long ago, maybe Red John believes that Visualize is the only organization with enough power to compete with him and he wants to use Jane and the CBI to take them down, maybe he even has strong religious beliefs and wants to destroy Visualize for religious reasons. Or maybe Bret Stiles knows too much about him and has become a threat, some kind of threat that would be too dangerous to simply kill (imagine if Stiles has left a note somewhere in a safe to be opened after his death, revealing the identity of Red John...)

I think maybe is FBI Agent Kirkland
(Kevin Corrigan). He shakes hands with Jane, I don't remember in what episode, I think in season 5. Maybe in the flashback when Jane first arrives at CBI.
