THE THEORIES

I suspect that Bret  Partridge is not dead, and even may be Red John or an associate.  Just because he was covered with blood and collapsed in front of Lisbon, doesn't necessarily mean that he is dead.  I'm waiting to see next weeks episode to see if his body is found.  The voice that spoke on Teresa's phone sounded exactly like Partridge.  He was the most popular suspect before Episode 6.1, and it would be good writing to have him supposedly killed off, while hiding in reality.  He also knew the phrase 'Tyger Tyger' which is Red John's favorite.

One thing you guys need to remember. The smiley face on the barn. It is 25 years old. The person who painted it was a teenager. This would put Red John in his 40's. Use this info when deciding your theory.

Okay after reading a few other theories I believe Kirkland and Stiles is RJ and POSSIBLY Bertram. It seems far fetched but I just think it might.

I am positive that the words written in blood when Jared Renfrew was murdered is "He is many" written by Renfrew.

Most refer to Patrick Jane as Jane. Red John, Kirkland and Bret Stiles are the only alive ones remaining that call him Patrick.

When Patrick Jane first meets Bob Kirkland, Bob claims that he knows Patrick - Patrick doesn't seem to know him though.
Even on Patrick's first day, Kirkland was after him. He got a woman to call Bertram to inform him that Patrick was a mental patient and had the potential to work for RJ or even be RJ.
He hired 2 Homeland Security officers to break into PJ's attic to get a replica of Jane's pin board and other theories/leads. This data could have EASILY allowed Kirkland to shortlist the same suspects that Jane got.
He killed RJ's friend in hospital with the poisonous injection but DID NOT ASK HIM WHO RED JOHN WAS (which seems like an extremely obvious question to ask unless you know who is).
Kirkland said if he were in this situation he would want a "friend" to do this for him - accomplices are often referred to as "friends" of RJ

Visualize seem to be at the root of everything - between the red barn smiley face, Lorilei saying that she has reached her full "reality" after the death of her sister (that nothing can hurt her now), and the extreme hypnotic devotion of the group to Visualize.
All of RJ's followers are completely devoted to him. They would rather kill themselves than be taken alive by CBI or other police forces.

In Season 6 ep. 1 Bertram is just out of character.
He told Jane and Lisbon that there were whispers that Jane "was getting close. At least he thought he was." then got jumpy and kinda flustered. Wouldn't Lisbon and Jane heard people saying stuff around the office? Bertram's smart remark about Jane thinking he was getting close seemed to be a rare mistake of RJ.
Also early in an earlier season Bertram recited a poem written by the same man that wrote "Tyger! Tyger!" that RJ recited to Jane after rescuing him. This was extremely out of character for Bertram. He has never in any prior episode expressed interest in poetry nor literacy in general.

As I said at the beginning: unlikely but possible.
Anyways let me know what you think please!

My gut feeling, even before seeing season 5,  was Bob Kirkland.  After seeing season 5, he became a little more obvious, so I started second guessing my "gut feeling," but still cannot dismiss him.

Some thoughts:

*Most people refer to Patrick Jane as "Jane;" however, there are 3 people that call him Patrick:  Red John, Bob Kirkland, and Bret Stiles.
*Bob Kirkland not only proves that he is a cold/calculating killer when he kills the man that can reveal who RJ is, but also exhibits psychopathic qualities as well:  he is very calm ... says if he were in this situation he would want a "friend" to do this for him (people are always referred to as being "friends" of RJ).

I'm not 100% sure, of course, but Bob Kirkland was definitely my original choice.  The only thing that I am struggling with in the theory is that Visualize definitely seems to be at the root of everything ... between the red barn smiley face, Lorilei saying that she has reached her full "reality," after the death of her sister (that nothing can hurt her now), and the extreme "cult" following / almost hypnotic devotion of the group.

My money's on Kirkland.  Kirkland is the only one who had access to Patrick's data so he could have deduced the same list that Patrick had compiled.   I feel either he IS Red John or is a Red John informant.

Heller's assessment of each suspect:

Brett Stiles (Malcolm McDowell): "He's certainly a frontrunner, partly because it's Malcolm McDowell," Heller quips of the recurring guest star, who plays the leader of the Visualize cult. (Not to mention his history of insanity.) "He has the money, he has the resources, and he certainly has the kind of single-minded temperament and lust for power that you would expect to have from someone like Red John," Heller notes

Gale Bertram (Michael Gaston):
As the CBI director, Bertram is certainly in an ideal position to carry out the Red John killings. "[Being] well-placed inside a law enforcement organization, gives him a lot of power," Heller says. "He has admitted that he is a duplicitous and a manipulative person already. We know he can play two sides of the same issue very well. He's certainly got the intellect for it. Whether he has the depth of evil required of this guy, that remains to be seen."

Bob Kirkland (Kevin Corrigan):
The Homeland Security agent is "a dark horse," according to Heller. "If you were a betting man, he'd be an outside shot I think, but a good dark horse. He is probably the most mysterious of the candidates, and that makes him suspicious. His behavior sometimes, even what we've seen of his behavior, is inexplicable and even murderous. So, if he ain't Red John, he's certainly one weird cat."

Ray Haffner (Reed Diamond):
Heller characterizes former CBI supervisor and cult member Ray Haffner as "the sort of Richard Gere-as-villain type. Smiling, charming. Maybe seems a little too shallow to be a serial killer, or too light. ... With Haffner, he always seems smiling and cheery but there always seems to be a dark cloud behind that smile. That, more than anything, would be what made me suspicious of him."

Reede Smith (Drew Powell):
Reed certainly has a temper, but does that make him a killer? "He doesn't even try to hide his anger. He's clearly a man with issues," Heller admits. "The question is, Red John is obviously a very, very intelligent person. What would be a better place to hide your real sort of psychopathic anger than behind a mask of anger? Probably most people are expecting Red John to be a calm, cool, collected type of person. If you were Red John and you wanted to disguise yourself, then you would certainly disguise yourself as the kind of red-faced, angry kind of guy that he can be."

Thomas McAllister (Xander Berkeley):
"Again, he's well-placed as a law enforcement official," Heller says of Sheriff McAllister. "He, like Kirkland, has a lot of mystery in his past that makes it difficult to judge. He's a dark horse candidate. He's not a Top 3. He hasn't displayed any signs of madness or anger or homicidal tendencies. So, there's no handle on which Jane can put his suspicions — which in itself is suspicious."

Brett Partridge (Jack Plotnick):
"You've always got to be suspicious of the nerds," Heller cautions. "He's both a slightly embittered soul and a very intelligent person. Someone who feels they've been underestimated, underrated and mistreated by the world. Demographically, he's right there where a profiler would say, 'Yeah.'" As far as his career choice as a forensic investigator, "That's exactly the kind of job that a serial killer would want to take up. That's exactly the interests that a serial killer would have. [But] he always appears slightly weedy. Is he concealing strength or is he really that flaccid a person? It's hard to tell."

  - each suspect can be the reel Red John, the mysterious character of Bob Kirkland let me think he may be a
frontrunner suspect.
