I reckon that jane kills the supected red john, ergo mccalister. that is the end of episode eight. two years later Jane gets a phone call, it is the voice of red john. that will be the other episodes.

Holy mother of God ... What the hell is going on?!!!
So if I get this right, there was a link on the CBS website to the episode that reveals who Red John is... And this over 2 days before the episode was supposed to come out?
I tried to open the link but the video won't work in my "location" (Belgium).
So can someone explain?! Is it even plausible that this would be the real episode? Do we see the scenes that were in the previews etc?
I suspect, that BP was RJ in Hellers mind till season 6. But then fans figured it out too quickly, so he switched to another character which was there from the beginning. Less obvious plan B, I might say.
That is why nothing is explained. Clues don't entirely match. And the whole thing is rushed to the end. Even the last episode was about nothing most of the time. Unimportant events, feeling up the episode till the last showdown. Heller simply did not know, how to connect all those clues to McAllister, so he filled the episode with nothing really.
This is the only good reason for such a poor end of RJ.
I'm even more convinced now that RJ was originally Brett Partridge and Heller changed it, and screwed it up, because people figured it out. In the season two finale it doesn't look like anyone but Brett Partridge when paused as he slits the girl's throat. I guess he could be "doing RJ's dirty work" but imo it's more likely that RJ was changed.
This whole season definitely feels rushed (the blake association? really? stupid.) and even though both actors did a great job, I still feel let down. The episode itself wasn't so bad, it did deliver, but I just wish things had been done differently. The pigeon was a nice touch.
Lots of stuff is left unanswered and I just don't picture Red John as a hick sheriff. I mean, I guess the name Red John itself is pretty backwoods so maybe it should have been obvious from the beginning...
I'd have loved for RJ to be Dean Harken, Brett Partridge, Walter Mashburn, or Ray Haffner.
I have a solution!
Two years pass, everything is normal, everyone seems to have moved on, when suddenly, a murder happens, signature Red John, Jane appears, do not believe what's happening, when suddenly the phone rings: "Hello Patrick".
This is perfect for the season finale of the 6th season. Everything would change, and we would have great expectation for next season again.
Unlikely, does not cost to dream right?
(Salute from Brazil, sorry for English.)
In an interview Heller statet that most would be explained, he didnt wanna have an ending ,like the show with the polar bear ;)
From what I can read here at the forum and other site, Heller has come up with an even worse ending, ( how that is even possible, is beyond me)
I
understand that not everything could be explaned down to every last
detail, but c'mon, from what I can read we almost dont get any
explanation what so ever :o
Every press member who have seen the
episode call's it brilliant and mindblowing, every audience viewer thing
it sucks, ( haven't seen it myself) but when ppl agree that even
Stoopkid's theory that RJ is Van Pelt is better than the episode, I'm
nor sure if I even wanna see it this sunday, ( atleast if it is
confirmed by you guys that what you have seen today is the actually real
thing) then it's better to make up my own theory and stick with that one.
