THE THEORIES

Guys, you might think this is just another stupid theory, but I am not lying.

Red John is one of 2 people: Reede Smith ( http://thementalist.wikia.com/wiki/Reede_Smith ) or Gale Bertram ( http://thementalist.wikia.com/wiki/Gale_Bertram ) . I figured this out by going on their pages (above) . It shows the last appearance (episode) . The other 3 suspects' (Bret Stiles, Sheriff Thomas McCallister, Ray Haffner) Last Appearance is the episode "Fire and Brimstone". My two suspects' last episode says "Red John". That's what I think, but out of those two: Reede Smith sure has the antagonistic attitude, but Gale Bertram sure has the recourses. I'd say Gale Bertram, that's it.

I'm unsure of who RJ is, hats of to Bruno Heller but i have my top 2 suspects.

Kirkland and Partridge are dead

Stiles - to old for me, i don't think a 70 year old could strangle and murder so many woman.

Smith - If its him i'd be pissed off, he's fat and doesn't match anything to do with RJ.

Haffner - He's the perfect candidate and i suspected him the moment the list was revealed, i want
             to be surprised !!

McAllister - He appeared early on, he's a good shot with a gun, jokes when he kills someone,
has a good scene of smell, he is around 50 on the show so fits the description of
being middle aged, he was very layed back when Jane entered the room in Ep2 and
he's played by Xander Berkeley and i just watch 24 season 2 - he blew me away.

Bertram - He is around middle aged, would have the contacts in other agencies, possibly hiding
in plain site, he keeps up with the news and the way the CBI is portrayed in it - like RJ,
and how would Timothy Carter know to be at the mall if Bertram hadn't told him ?

Cheers

After season 5 ended i posted a theory suggesting that Ellis Mars is Red John. Although i still strongly believe that he is Red John, i have recently come across some information that would also lead me to believe that Gale Bertram is RJ. I was recently watching an old episode of The Mentalist, called "Red Queen." Toward the middle of the episode Bertram is talking to Lisbon and when he is finished talking he recited a poem: "When thy little heart doth wake,Then the dreadful night shall break." This poem is called Cradle Song by William Blake. I then looked up the poem "Tiger Tiger" and i wasn't surprised to see that it was by the same writer, William Blake. This is a great reason to believe that Bertram is Red John, I still support my theory that Ellis Mars is Red John, and i actually don't believe that RJ is on the list of seven suspects simply because The Mentalist isn't your average crime show, and a simple proses of elimination wouldn't fit the style of the show, PJ has always been the mastermind solving the cases, and the only way to find RJ would be with his skills. If you haven't read my theory on Ellis Mars, go read it, and read the more recent ones as well, and i think you too will believe that Ellis Mars is Red John.

From a recent interview:

"I was surprised, and had I been Red John, I would have been equally surprised," she said.Robin, who plays Senior Special Agent Teresa Lisbon on the show, admitted she was kept in the dark until the episode.

To me, this tells me that (assuming the list of 7 is genuine) RJ is somebody who is not a usual suspect or a creepy or 'bad' guy. It seems like Bertrum fits somebody who would suprise both Lisbon and the actor playing Bertrum. Stiles would surprise neither. Haffner would surprise neither. Mcallister neither. (Remember, Robin is referring to her shock during the actual episode of the reveal, so given the first 5 episodes, Haffner or Sherrif or even Smith would come a no surprise to her). It must be either Bertrum, or perhaps Partridge (which would certainly surprise both of them!).

Or perhaps Robin is just being coy to the media, which is on second thoughts more likely. What do you think?

the hand shake could have been a false assumption based on the unwritten law of chess, you must shake hands before a match.
18-5-4 Did Bunting shake hands with Jane? I don't think so but they did play chess.
