If you look at The Mentalist Wiki website there is a list of upcoming episodes.  The episode before the "Red John" episode is entitled "The Great Red Dragon".  I realy think that all of our theories will be answered on that show.  I think the seven suspects are akin to the seven headed dragon painted in a series of paintings by William Blake (author of "The Tyger") poem.  These supposedly represent the devil ( the 666 reference in the hallway in 6x1) and I think that it will be shown that all seven suspects were in a conspiracy of some sort that invloved the seven-headed evil dragon. 

The "Red John" episode will focus only on the clues to the Red John story that we have all debated endlessly about for the past few years.  The focus will be on Kristina Frye, Rosiland Harker and maybe even Erica Flynn.  There will be some resolution to the Red John story (Patrick will have to win)

The next episode is supposedly "My Blue Heaven" which will be the first part of the next Mentalist chapter with the new characters introduced in the CBI and Jane's life will be a lot happier.

Couldn't Red John be Patricks father? He taught him everything but Patrick was better at it. His father was HIGHLY upset about quitting the business, especially after they had the dying girl and her mom completely conned. Then Patrick changed his mind and his father got upset. It would also explain how Red John was able to destroy a happy memory...his father was there so he would jnow about it.

First of all Patrick jane cannot be RJ because Lorelei said that PJ had shook his hands with RJ, Hence RJ can't be an alter ego of PJ.

I can't surely say who is red john as of now but it's definitely not Jane.

Does anyone have any thoughts on when the nurse came in lisbon hospital room with the wrong name it seemed benign enough but generally things like that mean something

 Only the 2nd episode of the season and it seems 90% say it's Haffner.  This is the exact reason why I am saying it's  NOT!

There where SO many red herrings thrown out there last night that were so FREAKIN' obvious that they were laughable!  Most of them were the words and actions of the 6 remaining suspects.  Heller would NEVER be so transparent to make Haffner  act that way so early in the show.  It's obvious that Bertram, MacAllister, Reede and Kirkland are planning something of their own that may or MAY NOT be considered a Red John cover-up.  My guess is Red John is watching THEM and Jane knows it.  This is why he is following them so closely and why he told Lisbon they were the suspects.  He now has the entire team focused on them so he can venture out further while keeping tabs on the others.

Odd things I noticed:

1.  Pigeons (again)  the camera made a distinct pan across them as the person was feeding them by the bench.  (We saw them last week in the house where Lisbon was attacked.

2.  Why did no one mention the CIRCUS-type smiley face that was painted on Lisbon? (btw,  a REAL forensic team would have Jane's head for taking that evidence!!)

3.  Okay sure, the Jay Roth (re: Red) sounds very convincing but didn't you hear the other name before that?  WASHBURN?  Hello?  MASHBURN!!!!    Listen to the description she is describing for this Jay Roth person.  It could be Mashburn!   I could see Mashburn using the name Jay Roth as a client but planting a fake client to use the name Washburn knowing Jane would eventually find the list. I didn't put Mashburn's pic in the suspects accusation photo knowing many of you would immediately vote this "unlikely."   Sue me.  I like a little drama.  ;)

I think RED John is a group of people. Last nights episode when the group was talking after Jane left the room. Its Bertrams job to keep track of what jane knows. The others seem to order him around. And if any of them are individually RED John that bit makes NO sense.
