I presented this theory last year when Rigsby wasn't a suspect. The episode where Jane drank the hallucinogen tea made me think that what we are watching is Jane's alternate reality. 

What if:   1. Jane's wife was Laurelei (maybe she was divorcing him)
               2. Jane's wife and child die in a drunk driving accident with Wayne Rigsby
               3. Jane was also in the accident, which ended in an explosion
               4. Jane has had to interact with the medical examiner and investigation
               5. Sister Theresa Lisbon is praying for his lost soul (hence the cross that is
                   always around her neck)
Subtle Clues
               * Toy red corvette on table when Jane investigates the death of Laurelei's sister
               * Toy red corvette then shows up on Rigsby's desk in another episode
               * While Mashburn and Jane are joyriding in the yellow corvette, Jane was asked if 
                 he liked the car. Jane replied that the car was the wrong color
               * When Jane sees the body of Laurelei,, he says that she deserved it
               * Episode where Rigsby was in car accident and blood was streaming down his
                 face
               * Scotch bottle with red tip shown in another episode

S2e8 Why won't Rigsby drink tequila? He goes to get some Scotch. Anywhere else that's just a choice, but on a long well-thought out mystery it's a clue.

I don't really think Rigsby is Red John.  However, it was weird that Rigsby told Cho that he was going to fix him up with a girl.  Then the female dectective shows up and starts coming on to Cho.  Rigsby could not have murdered her because he was at HQ as her murder was in progress.  Is this just a coincidental or maybe evidence of some unapparent connection?  Perhaps the writers are just toying with us.  Maybe Rigsby or Cho has three dots tattooed on his left shoulder. 

The suspence builds!

Hello guys, 

I have submitted quite a few theories here. But lately I've been suspecting Gale Bertram being Red John. I've done a lot of reading and I've watched and listened to many interviews from the authors and actors of the mentalist. This being said, I put a lot of thought into the last episode.

In episode 6 as you guys know Patrick got all the 5 remaining suspects together and a bomb went off. Now what I am getting from this is that it was Red John's bomb. This is what is seems like at least from what the authors are saying.That being said, why would Red John set a bomb that would kill himself. I am really thinking that if Red John in fact set the bomb that he was NOT in the house. Also note how the bomb exploded right when Theresa arrived. Again remember how in episode 1 of season 6 (this season) Lisbon's life was spared by Red John for some reason. Now I don't know why but we will find out.

Now you might be asking me why I selected Rigsby, let's say that Red John did in fact plant the  bomb, it would most probably mean that Red John was not inside the house, which would mean that the authors deceived us and Red John is not on the list of 7 (or it's Partridge and he's not dead but I really hate this theory) and must be someone else. I selected Rigsby strategically, we all know that he and Van Pelt will both be leaving this Season... to me this is quite a big coincidence. 

This being said, I myself am not even sold on this theory, but it's the best I have after what happened during episode 6.

how come he is leaving the show after the final red john confrontation???????
