Who is Red John?

Theories of Thomiseen2 (1)

Mentalist fun fact of the day: while watching the Mentalist (Red Rover, Red Rover) you'll notice that after PJ gets drunk and he is burning the RJ files; the headline on the paper reads "victims connected". I believe this goes to the reason the FBI and Kirkland are involved. They aren't RJ but they are interested as to what these murders are all about. All the audience knows about the RJ's killings, are the ones done while the show takes place. These killings are all connected to the PJ story line. However, RJ was killing well before PJ showed up and it's those killings themselves that the FBI are curious about. What was it about thoses people that have been killed that worries the FBI. Knowingly or unknowingly they might be protecting somebody higher up (clearly the whole FBI can't be a RJ follower) but they were either following a case or the victims themselves and wanted to keep tabs on PJ to see if he could figure it out or led them somewhere. That's why Kirkland is back, not to jump out of the closet and say "Surprise I''m RJ" . Sure would love to know more about these original victims and early RJ stories, could yield some real clues! That and it's better tv then PJ every week asking people he shook hands with, "hi are you RJ."
Speaking of handshakes, most of the time PJ does not hake hands. Didn't do it with Stiles (interpreted his filming) didn't do it with Mashburn (ran into him at his lunch date). Didn't do it with Partridge (couldn't stand him) Now, the "handshake" might just be a phrase LM used but if used literally, there have not been a lot of them.
Happy watching!
