Who is Red John?

Theories of annamnlng (1)

When I
first saw Jane’s suspect list, I had a feeling that all had something to do with
the seven sins. With all the Blake connections, tiger and the lamb, the coexistence
of evil and good, I thought it was a little more than just a coincidence that
Jane had seven suspects.

I am
thinking that there are 6 sinners on that list together with RJ. They somehow
made bad choices, big mistakes, which brought them to RJ, made them vulnerable
and dependent. Maybe not all of them know who RJ really is. However, they do
his bidding, most probably providing information, cleaning up his mess, etc. not
too lose their positions or freedom. I think they also got to know each other over
the years and developing their own plan to get rid of RJ. That would be my
explanation for the trailer of 6x4, where Kirkland tries to get Jane’s list, as
well as all for all the discussions “Can we trust him?” or “How much does Jane
exactly know?”. Bertram wants to be at the scene, maybe to make sure that RJ
will not be arrested and brought to court. This way he can prevent him to name
them as his disciples. These 6 on the list were the most valuable ones so far,
so RJ wanted to keep them and didn’t dispose them like he usually does.

Coming back
to the 7 sins, after some googling and a rerun of “The Name of the Rose” I have
found the list of sins, colors, and punishments:

Pride
(Violet): broken on the wheel

Envy
(Green): put in freezing water

Sloth
(Light blue): thrown in snake pits

Greed
(Yellow): put in cauldron of boiling oil

Gluttany
(Orange): forced to eat rats, toads and snakes
Lust
(Blue): smothered in fire and brimstone

Wrath
(Red): dismembered alive

Today I saw
the title of the 6th episode “Fire and brimstone” and I was just tempted to
post my thoughts here to get maybe some hints to match suspects and sins :)
Considering RJ’s style, I don’t really believe that the punishments will comply
with the list, and also some of them will survive the hunt.

With the
way he behaved himself in episode 1x2 drooling over VanPelt, McAllister would
qualify rather well for lust.

I have a
feeling that Partridge takes either envy or sloth.

Stiles or
Bertram could fit to greed? Kirkland could fit to pride, Smith maybe gluttony?

My gut
tells me RJ is Haffner. However, I actually don’t know much about the past of
most suspects, so it is nothing more than a wild guess.

This makes
me admire the work of Heller even more, with all the twists. I think we will
have some flashbacks in the post RJ episodes. I like very much that, Jane more
or less impersonates all the sins himself and still can strive for redemption
and how RJ is portrayed as the proud Master, who can convert people with
weaknesses to sinners, and a sinner like Jane to a good honest man.
