LATEST THEORIES

Initially, I believe, the writers intended Red John to be your
run-of-the-mill serial killer. Albeit, an extremely clever, egotistical, sociopathic serial killer. But a simple serial killer nonetheless.   As the series progressed, in order to keep it
interesting, they started piling on more and more layers of Red John plot
twists. Red John’s minions served as a series of false summits. Red John? Nope,
just kidding; it’s just another one of his minions. They threw in some red herrings too.

Somewhere along the way, the character of Red John transformed
from “straightforward serial killer” to  “criminal mastermind with unlimited power,
knowledge, charm, connections, resources, etc.”
I think during that transformation, the writers lost sight of the
character. It is hard to reconcile season one's Red John with season five's Red John.

Why would an all-powerful, evil genius who has
“an army” at his command, randomly (and increasingly less frequently - when was
the last Red John as serial killer murder?)  draw red
smiley faces over random kills?  Those types of serial killers are always people without real
power. People who live seemingly ordinary, isolated lives.  Can you really see a powerful, cunning character
like Bret Stiles acting like an ordinary sidereal killer and drawing smiley faces? Even Walter Mashburn says that if he killed someone, "they would disappear. It would be like they never existed."

The entire Red John storyline has lost sight of itself. Seriously,
watch the entire series again. So many things don’t make sense. It’s because the writers kept changing the character of Red John as they went along. They didn't begin with a clear idea. Now the writers have written themselves into a corner. The
character of Red John is so incongruous and uneven that any reveal is going to
be a letdown.  I think the Mentalist
jumped the shark when Jane shot Red John, only for it to be yet another “just
kidding” moment.

It took this from Xenon in Yahoo answers and I agree with it. The text was in spanish so i'll try to translate it to english

In the last chapter of the first season, RJ's ex-girlfriend(Harker Rosalind), describes him as a good person (insists precisely on the fact that he is a very good person, and that allows him to see into people's inside) so Red John, or the character who represents, also appears to the viewer as a good person. The ex-girlfriend also describe him as high and Caucasian. This matches with Rigsby.

Another suspicious detail is that Rigsby and Harker Rosalind didn't appear together in the episode (so she couldn't identify him), and many other aspects, the conclusion is quite simple.

To give some examples, Rigsby shows great concern for the content of their personal file, which was read by Cho, and he demandded him what did it say about him.

On the other hand, Rigsby shows a strange trauma to women, a sort of inability to communicate with the beloved, or to confess his feelings, to Grace Van Pelt continuously. Apparently, it's a trauma that goes back to childhood, and the causes and consequences are, ineffably, behind the chain of murders starring Red John.

RJ is always aware of the steps of the group of Lisbon and Jane, something that could only happen if RJ is a real insider. So he could always go ahead of them.

Moreover, in the chapter on the hypnotists, Rigsby says at one point that, killing when you are drunk "could happen to anyone." What's more, in that same episode, when hypnotized, he reveals his true self violent, attacking several people, and being about to throw Patrick Jane from a rooftop when Jane had said minutes ago that "a hypnotized saint is still a saint, "that means that if he was a good person he would have behaved as one, no matter how hypnotized he was.

I hope the translation is good enough

I am about 75% sure he could be red john . If not then probably someone inside the CBI who's under the radar

Well I know one thing that It cant be Van Pelt, Rigsby, Cho, Lisbon, or Jane because its some one working in the FBI and Jane isnt realy "bestfriends" with any of them but he's close with them plus he cant shake hands with himself and half those people on that list are dead. I think that the writter either will have Red John be obvioulsy him but you wouldnt have thought about that person, or someone REALLY obvious...if that make sense?

If I were a betting man, I would place my money on Bertram.

I'd also place a wee wager on either Stiles or LaRoche!!

I think it's Dr. Roy Carmen from the 2009 episodes "Red Badge" and "The scarlet letter" (played by Christian Clemenson). Just because both parts of his name Roy and Carmen mean Red. Let's wait and see. Will watch those episodes tonight, maybe I'll see it in the different light.
Haha, I don't want this show to stop, but I'm soooo curious about Red John's identity.

I don't have a clear vision of who it is yet.  But, it deserves to be pointed out that Jane doesn't shake hands with people very often.  In fact it is rather infrequent.  Also she said, "I'm suprised you didn't become the best of friends from the moment you shook hands."  To me this indicates that they did not become the best of friends.  So whoever Red John I'm assuming it's one of the characters that is someone:

- Jane HAS shaken hands with
- that Jane doesn't get along with
- that has been on he show long enough for a relationship or lack thereof to develop between Jane and Roy.

And as a sidenote ... Roy means 'red'  HA  isn't that brilliant?! I googled it.  This show is one of most well written shows I ever!
