This theory is a loose one and just a wild thought;

I was watching the pilot today, in which they mention  how people look at the magicians assistant instead of the magician. Maybe Bertram, Smith etc are trying to hide their shady goings on by creating a distraction, maybe they created Red John!

When I
first saw Jane’s suspect list, I had a feeling that all had something to do with
the seven sins. With all the Blake connections, tiger and the lamb, the coexistence
of evil and good, I thought it was a little more than just a coincidence that
Jane had seven suspects.

I am
thinking that there are 6 sinners on that list together with RJ. They somehow
made bad choices, big mistakes, which brought them to RJ, made them vulnerable
and dependent. Maybe not all of them know who RJ really is. However, they do
his bidding, most probably providing information, cleaning up his mess, etc. not
too lose their positions or freedom. I think they also got to know each other over
the years and developing their own plan to get rid of RJ. That would be my
explanation for the trailer of 6x4, where Kirkland tries to get Jane’s list, as
well as all for all the discussions “Can we trust him?” or “How much does Jane
exactly know?”. Bertram wants to be at the scene, maybe to make sure that RJ
will not be arrested and brought to court. This way he can prevent him to name
them as his disciples. These 6 on the list were the most valuable ones so far,
so RJ wanted to keep them and didn’t dispose them like he usually does.

Coming back
to the 7 sins, after some googling and a rerun of “The Name of the Rose” I have
found the list of sins, colors, and punishments:

Pride
(Violet): broken on the wheel

Envy
(Green): put in freezing water

Sloth
(Light blue): thrown in snake pits

Greed
(Yellow): put in cauldron of boiling oil

Gluttany
(Orange): forced to eat rats, toads and snakes
Lust
(Blue): smothered in fire and brimstone

Wrath
(Red): dismembered alive

Today I saw
the title of the 6th episode “Fire and brimstone” and I was just tempted to
post my thoughts here to get maybe some hints to match suspects and sins :)
Considering RJ’s style, I don’t really believe that the punishments will comply
with the list, and also some of them will survive the hunt.

With the
way he behaved himself in episode 1x2 drooling over VanPelt, McAllister would
qualify rather well for lust.

I have a
feeling that Partridge takes either envy or sloth.

Stiles or
Bertram could fit to greed? Kirkland could fit to pride, Smith maybe gluttony?

My gut
tells me RJ is Haffner. However, I actually don’t know much about the past of
most suspects, so it is nothing more than a wild guess.

This makes
me admire the work of Heller even more, with all the twists. I think we will
have some flashbacks in the post RJ episodes. I like very much that, Jane more
or less impersonates all the sins himself and still can strive for redemption
and how RJ is portrayed as the proud Master, who can convert people with
weaknesses to sinners, and a sinner like Jane to a good honest man.

In S01E23, jane discovered that Sheriff Hardy (Dumar) was a friend of Red John and his father was an accomplice of Red John , and was in the farm on 90's.
Sheriff Hardy (Dumar) was born on
16 septembre 1978, so now he is 35 years old.
we can estimate his father's age between: 55 and 65 years.
Red john is a friend with the father and the sometime with the son.

Sheriff Thomas mccalister is 58 years old.
Robert Kirkland is 44 years old.
Raymond haffner is 46 years old
Gale bertram is 51 years old.

Hi all,

Red John is one of the seven people call. Because I came to a clear explanation. If this list is fake immunity told CBS 'reputation or something, do not lie this time, the statement said. So tell me, clearly said Brett Partridge died, was emphatically called six suspects. Both the original site, to your facebook page as well as fragments of a new promotion. How much do you think it would be right to have a lie?Do you think the right thing to mislead the audience? Viewers theories focus on producing six suspects. I do not think it would be something like this. I think Brett Partridge is dead. And Red from John Ray Haffner.

I take back what i said about Walter Mashburn being Red John.

He is filming 4 movies at the same time! he doesn't have time for a TV show.

i really wanted Red John to be either Partridge or Mashburn :(.Really sad.. i cant see any character that can be Red John at this point, you say Haffner? hes dumb weak open book character who admitted that Jane is smarter than him.

If i had to choose i would say Gale Bertram.

I always thought the scene when Red John saves Patrick was way more important than we may think:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKZvmwU1ufg

Why?

We all know Patrick has an extremly sharp eye and notices everything and I mean every single little thing.

My first thougt when watching this scene was: Patrick now knows who Red John is. They are staring at each other from 1:32 to 1:50 from litteraly 1 inch. Jane has too good of an eye not to notice something. At least the color of the eyes, the way RJ breathes, smells, walks, something. He wore a mask, I realize that, but he had openings for eyes. Just like they are on every mask. And the smile on Patrick's face at 2:43 when RJ leaves confirms that in my opinion. He noticed something.

I was, at that time, sure Partridge is RJ. The voice, the teasing coming back simillar to what Patrick did to him at the start of the episode... I'm just not sure Heller is sticking to this plan. I think Partridge was supposed to be Red John, but a lot of people figured that out too quickly, so there is a possibilty Heller changed the story and someone else would be THE guy we are all curious to guess. Or Heller thought we're so dumb we won't think of a possibilty that Partirdge faked his death. We'll see.

For me, the most important things, that point to Partirdge are: voice, the fact he is there from the very first episode and the most important one: Patrick feels very uncomfortable around him. I don't care about Sophie's or Rosalind Harker's description. I believe what I see. And Jane is always in control of people. Except Partirdge irks him, as he says. Jane also says that he feels on the crime scene when RJ is involved. So, he also feels the negative vibe when Brett is around. He just doesn't have anything to be 100% sure and is never truly alone with him.

I think Patrick knows who Red John is for a while, but he is playing the game, trying to trick RJ just like he does all the time with every other suspects at the crimes that occur during episodes.

Let's hope for a great ending to Red John saga and a fascinating continuation of the series, because it is just great!

I found this very interesting http://www.whoisredjohn.com/See-a-theory-Red-John/6392 7 heads = 7 suspects in the list.
So, my final theory is that RJ REALLY WAS  Bradley Whitford. Then the CBI people decided that they needed to bring PJ back to help them solve cases, so they all worked together in order to make him believe that RJ is still alive. Hence the meeting in Bertram's office and the line "how much does Jane know?". This would also explain what happened to Lisbon and the 7 heads.
