LATEST THEORIES

Hi everyone.
First of all I want to thank all of the people posting theories, I enjoy reading them all, no matter how crazy they are, keep up the great work!

I posted my own first theory 2 weeks ago and it's kinda funny, because my take on who Red John is, is completely different now.

Where do I start ...

Having seen the extended promo for "The Great Red Dragon", When Rigsby says "RJ planted the bomb to kill Jane & the other suspects" while pointing to the clipboard behind him with Bret Stiles, Ray Haffner and Thomas McAllister on it, I assume that these 3 are killed by the bomb, which leaves only two suspects alive.

Gale Bertram and Reede Smith.

Now... everyone imagines Red John as the Bret Stiles-kinda guy. The guy who has so many followers, leads a cult, has mind-bending power etc., while in reality, he's just a normal man. I think exactly THAT is his coverage. Think about it... This is exactly how Red John would act.

Reede Smith....
... fooled Kirkland with ease when Kirkland said "Tyger Tyger" to him. (Which proves that he can lie very good)
... had no hesitation killing Kirkland with six shots in the back. (Which proves that he has no inhibitions killing people. See the look on his face when he shoots?)

Nobody knows Smith and nobody would recognize him. The director of the CBI is often on TV. I imagine Bret Stiles also to be on TV a lot. Is being Red John really possible if a lot of people know you? I don't think so.

Red John tried to bug the CBI. Now why on earth would Bertram bug the CBI? He can just ask Lisbons team to keep him informed.

But... if Red John worked at the FBI (like Reede does), he could have a reason to bug the CBI. Now you may say: But he's in the Tyger Tyger thing with Bertram. Okay... let's see what Smith said to Bertram:
"it's your job to find out what Jane knows".

Maybe Smith now tries to get information first hand because Bertram didn't find out enough? Maybe he was angry because when Jane said RJ has done a mistake he got cautious... so RJ assumed that Bertram must have missed something. A perfect reason to bug the CBI himself instead of relying on Bertrams information.

A lot of people assume Bertram leads the Tyger Tyger conspiracy, but why would Bertram take orders in a Tyger Tyger meeting from Reede Smith then?

Another thing: Heller said people would be disappointed. Why could that be? Again, Reede Smith just appears an ordinary man, not the monster people make him out to be.

Robin Tunney (Teresa Lisbon) was shocked when she found it out, even more "than if she herself was Red John". What other guy than Reede Smith can have this shock effect? The Partridges, Bertrams, Stiles, Haffners have a lot of clues leading to them, Smith has not.

That is exactly how I imagine Red John would act. To be the guy in the shadows, the guy that no one expects. People look at the big spotlights... CBI Director, the cult leader Stiles.., but not at the seemingly unimportant Reede Smith.

In addition to that, the actor that plays Red John was "stunned and flattered" and "thought he was a Red Herring". Exactly the same. If I was the guy playing Reede Smith I would be as surprised.

Some playing-around:
Reede Smith is an anagram of  "The Red is me".
Reede Smith ... Reed - Red, Smith - Tagliaferro (cutiron) ... is this a coincedence?

You don't have to convince me who Red John is, you have to convince me it isn't Reede Smith. :)

Thanks for reading & let me know if I did a mistake in my deductions or your thoughts about this. Excited to read.

I don't have a theory and I have stopped trying to figure out.

But what IS CLEAR is that, we have 2 groups amongst us fans:

1. Fans who think/want Brett Partridge as Red John
2. Fans who think/want Ray Haffner as Red John

Now, what would be fun is that writers coming up with something that really really surprises us. Someone else who we know.. That'd be awesome.. and healthy for the show too.
Or maybe not so.. Anyway, I am of the Partridge fan group.

To all my fellow Mentalist fans, I'd say

               KEEP CALM
                      AND
                WAIT FOR
 RED JOHN vs. JANE BATTLE!!

Staple features of most theories:

Sherriff McAllister Theories: Xander Berkley is awesome. Rock, Paper, Scissors emphasis. Overanalysis of relationship with Patrick, which could apply to any suspect.

Bret Stiles Theories: Malcolm McDowell is awesome.

Ray Haffner Theories: He fits the physical description. Usually use their theories to judge other suspect's personalities. The most common suspect in process of elimination theories.

Bob Kirkland theories: Conveniently leave out plotholes.

Michael Kirkland theories: Don't explain why Jason Lennon doesn't recognise him.

Gale Bertram theories: They're alright. He doesn't fit the physical description. Closer to the reveal, he is being picked as a result of process of elimination.

Brett Partridge theories: Managed to counter-argue every argument against their theories, the most common of which is "Brett Partridge is dead."... I don't know if Brett Partridge fans are all lawyers, but I have nothing to say against them.

I cannot truthfully say I've watched every single episode but I've watched most of them and simply feel that I'd like Patrick Jane to be Red John. I appreciate Bruno Heller says we can 'trust the list' but I would truly be disappointed if it were any of the Seven. None of them seem worthy or charismatic enough.

Even if we saw it coming miles away, I wouldn't be in the least disappointed to discover PJ had an evil alter-ego. It would make so much sense.

I am however disappointed that this latest series can't be aired in the UK as early as it is in the US. The US will know the answer weeks before I will, here on the sunny east coast of England. I wonder how many other British viewers will log on to find who the killer is, long before the relevant program actually airs! I think I will!

hello all. i just have one question

In episode ''His red right hand'', 8th episode of 2nd season we found that doctor of 3rd and 4th Red John's victims is dead, dr. Towlen Morning. His body is actually found at the beginning of the episode, naked and placed frozen somewhere outside. It's clear as day he is dead.

Then, in some episode of season 5, actually at the end of episode, we see Jane looking at his book of suspects, and there is a name dr. Towlen Morning and a note: deceased?

My question is why would they do that? Why showing to viewers that doctor, even dead, is still among Jane's evaluation of possible Red John suspect?

Is it something we should consider that in some future episodes, or they are just having a very bad taste and are messing with audience in not right way?

To add to my earlier theory, just to clarify.

Who says Bob Kirkland was 'really' hunting Red John? In the same way Jane mindfucks red John, Red John mindfucks Jane.
If Bob was really hunting Red John - the murder of Jason Lennon would not have taken place - simple as that. All Bob says to Lennon is "your MIND is clear - (classic hypnotism) - and then "have you seen me before". Lennon's memory has been 'washed' and then he is killed.
Still not sure which 'Bob's' we saw were Michael, and which were Bob - but guaranteed something is going to evolve from this.

Bob (Red John) knew Patrick Jane has been getting closer and closer from the minute Jane met Lorelei Martins. He needed to provide himself with some 'cover' and a legitimate excuse to find out just how close Jane was getting. What better way than to 'be hunting for Red John himself, due to a brother that been led astray - yeah right - lead astray by Bob more likely' and what better way to 'disguise' this?

Bob's big mindfuck of Jane: 'giving him the brother story' (which probably has some truth in it somewhere, but involving the 2 twins together: stronger twin saving the weaker - reading each other's minds - fighting the evil father etc) and hoping Jane believed it.
Kirkland has been playing TT and Jane in the same way Jane plays Red John: and in the process spinning a wonderful web in which he can escape (death to Michael) and hopefully disappear.
The failed bomb put an end to that.....

Kevin Corrigan would be a perfect red John. And boy, he would pull of a final showdown with Jane something special.

(Really hoping it's him - simply for the Corrigan performance)

SPOILER ALERT!

PJ say publicly to press a name. Probably one of the leaders of the Tiger. This will make all the police chase that person, leaving his way free to meet RJ at the park. We will see a large gathering. Epic!
