Hi, it's not to submit a theory, it's just to ask you a question.
Do you trust what Bruno Heller and Simon Baker said in the tv guide interview ?
Thanks for your answers.

After years here off and on and then a lot of time lately I've come to the sad conclusion............
THE LIST DOESN'T EXCITE ME. I don't find one person on the list that is dynamic, sneaky, sly...anything that I imagine RJ to be. This leads me to think I'll be disappointed. I'd rather have Rigsby or Van Pelt be RJ in a massive twist than any one of the 7.
I just think RJ is a lot smarter than the guys on the list. Someone who is there but isn't. An apparition. The person who can blend in while at the same time lead. When I see that weird person feeding pigeons I don't think.."that is Partridge in disguise." I think "maybe RJ is someone like that who is just out in the open, under their nose, hearing their conversations." He is always one step ahead. The people on that list seem almost like dumbed down minion than RJ.
Just talking.
I just had a look at the cast list for the episode 'Red John' on imdb.com, and it says that Walter Mashburn is Red John!!! Not sure if this is just to throw us off the scent!! Eeek!
First, I think there are a lot of really clever people here who are obviously dedicated fans of this show and they have given a lot of thought to solving this puzzle. It is great that this show and its talented cast and writers have generated this dedicated following. I really love The Mentalist.
The writers have done a nice job keeping this reveal plausible for multiple interesting characters. Good for them!
My guess is Haffner. Here are a few reasons (although others have provided many more):
-He is the only suspect with clear connections to both law enforcement and Visualize (allowing him to develop acolytes in both organizations)
-His law enforcement connections would put him in a position to set up Tyger, Tyger as a decoy, since that group may be a threat to him as well.
-The next episode says "Only three suspects remain" and then shows the three tattoos. But we don't know which suspects are killed in the blast. If a Tyger is among those killed in Jane's cottage, then one of the Visualize suspects could still be Red John.
-Haffner's personality is creepy and immature while being wily and clever. This fits RJ, who often taunts Patrick like a kid on the playground. "There's going to be a comeuppance," he said.
-Finally, Haffner has a thing for Teresa. If RJ wanted to destroy everything Patrick loves, he would have killed Lisbon long ago. But Haffner is intrigued by her.
That's my guess, but I understand that it is only that! I can't wait to find out.
The Great Red Dragon IS Satan, and Satan creates TWO BEASTS to work for him
1st BEAST [part lion, bear, leopard] from the SEA [which can mean nation of people] is called the ANTICHRIST -- SPREADER OF BLASPHEMY; has likeness of Satan w/ 7 heads and 10 horns & crowns [meaning 7 POSITIONS OF POWER/POLITICAL or GOVERNMENT LEADERS and AUTHORITIES
** ONE of the HEADs is hurt but then healed to show the power so no one will challenge it. The purpose is to put FEAR IN THE MIND of people to control them.
-----SOUNDS like Jane's list of "7 Suspects" and the TYGER TYGER organization ["a Beast" of sorts]
2nd BEAST is from the LAND, [two heads/horns] is a FALSE PROPHET or ANTI-HOLY SPIRIT, ensuring the success of BLASPHEMY amongst mankind. This FALSE PROPHET appears to "heal" others --- yet real agenda is self glorification -- a deceiver -- often using PSYCHIC abilities and powers experienced as part of "an enlightenment process" [even though in truth leads to self delusion and separation from God]
-----SOUNDS a bit like BRET STILES -- and even the now "reformed" Patrick Jane from his "former life"
The "Mark of the Beast" [called "666" but by no means having to actually look like that is thought to be put on foreheads and hands of mankind -- but this is translated simply as a MARK, a BRAND, or even a BUSINESS LOGO that people adhere to, worship and work for -- it's ANY KIND OF symbol that is put IN THE MINDS or used THROUGH THE HANDS of people -- who may or may not realize that they are serving a "false idol"
-----SOUNDS like the use of THE VISUALIZE LOGO and the 3 DOT TATTOO
OF COURSE, THE STORY GOES that eventually the TWO BEASTS get thrown into the lake of "Fire & Brimstone" --- just as TYGER TYGER and BRET STILES/HAFFNER/VISUALIZE are both about to experience in the latest episode
BUT, the question still remains: WHO IS RJ? And how does ANY of THIS relate to RJ?
1) Is RJ simply a part of the Beasts -- a TT and/or Visualize member? Like one of the 7 Suspects -- or
2) Is RJ unrelated to any of this? Someone working from afar, a ghost of sorts, like Kirkland Twin or from Jane's past?
OR3) IF RJ is meant to represent Satan -- the Great Red Dragon himself, is he IN CHARGE of, ruling over ALL THE SUSPECTS?
By sheer coincidence, I HEARD A RADIO SHOW this morning on the car radio that talked about SATAN: that said that Satan -- who was known as Lucifer, meaning "morning star", was called the most "perfect angel" by God. BUT, Lucifer fell in love with his own power and beauty, becoming narcissistic and PROUD, and wanted to BE WORSHIPPED instead of having TO WORSHIP. THUS, PRIDE was the very first sin. And the story goes -- Lucifer was cast out of heaven, put down to the earth and thus called SATAN == which means ACCUSER
Interestingly, I also just read that SATAN IS THE ULTIMATE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY
I have run through many suspect possibilities -- including Ellis Mars, Kristina Frye and the Kirkland twin BUT
IF RJ is meant to represent SATAN -- THEN he must exist as a very powerful character on the show -- HE WOULD HAVE TO BE SOMEONE ABOVE RANK OF ANY OF THE TT members we've met -- and also more powerful than STILES such that both TT and BS either work for him [as the TWO BEASTS WORK FOR SATAN] or understand that they are the little people underneath him
In the least, TT and Stiles FEAR HIM, HAVE to put up with him as a necessary evil -- perhaps a bit of both, though perhaps it is not entirely known to them who RJ is
SO, who has the most power over all of these people? The ATTORNEY GENERAL? Throughout the show -- the "AG" is repeatedly mentioned -- but there's no character we've been shown who is this person.
NEXT IN LINE is: THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY GENERAL but again, there's no character we've met who represents this high office -- the closest characters to the AG are 1) Assistant District Attorney OSCAR ARDILES, and Rigsby's Baby Momma, SARAH HARRIGAN, also an Assistant District Attorney
AND, GALE BERTRAM -- Gale Bertram reports to the Attorney General and is referred to as the Deputy Attorney General on Mentalist wiki
---- CAN ANYONE THINK OF any high ranking political character we've met -- higher than ARDILES? I can't.

Hi everyone.
First of all I want to thank all of the people posting theories, I enjoy reading them all, no matter how crazy they are, keep up the great work!
I posted my own first theory 2 weeks ago and it's kinda funny, because my take on who Red John is, is completely different now.
Where do I start ...
Having seen the extended promo for "The Great Red Dragon", When Rigsby says "RJ planted the bomb to kill Jane & the other suspects" while pointing to the clipboard behind him with Bret Stiles, Ray Haffner and Thomas McAllister on it, I assume that these 3 are killed by the bomb, which leaves only two suspects alive.
Gale Bertram and Reede Smith.
Now... everyone imagines Red John as the Bret Stiles-kinda guy. The guy who has so many followers, leads a cult, has mind-bending power etc., while in reality, he's just a normal man. I think exactly THAT is his coverage. Think about it... This is exactly how Red John would act.
Reede Smith....
... fooled Kirkland with ease when Kirkland said "Tyger Tyger" to him. (Which proves that he can lie very good)
... had no hesitation killing Kirkland with six shots in the back. (Which proves that he has no inhibitions killing people. See the look on his face when he shoots?)
Nobody knows Smith and nobody would recognize him. The director of the CBI is often on TV. I imagine Bret Stiles also to be on TV a lot. Is being Red John really possible if a lot of people know you? I don't think so.
Red John tried to bug the CBI. Now why on earth would Bertram bug the CBI? He can just ask Lisbons team to keep him informed.
But... if Red John worked at the FBI (like Reede does), he could have a reason to bug the CBI. Now you may say: But he's in the Tyger Tyger thing with Bertram. Okay... let's see what Smith said to Bertram:
"it's your job to find out what Jane knows".
Maybe Smith now tries to get information first hand because Bertram didn't find out enough? Maybe he was angry because when Jane said RJ has done a mistake he got cautious... so RJ assumed that Bertram must have missed something. A perfect reason to bug the CBI himself instead of relying on Bertrams information.
A lot of people assume Bertram leads the Tyger Tyger conspiracy, but why would Bertram take orders in a Tyger Tyger meeting from Reede Smith then?
Another thing: Heller said people would be disappointed. Why could that be? Again, Reede Smith just appears an ordinary man, not the monster people make him out to be.
Robin Tunney (Teresa Lisbon) was shocked when she found it out, even more "than if she herself was Red John". What other guy than Reede Smith can have this shock effect? The Partridges, Bertrams, Stiles, Haffners have a lot of clues leading to them, Smith has not.
That is exactly how I imagine Red John would act. To be the guy in the shadows, the guy that no one expects. People look at the big spotlights... CBI Director, the cult leader Stiles.., but not at the seemingly unimportant Reede Smith.
In addition to that, the actor that plays Red John was "stunned and flattered" and "thought he was a Red Herring". Exactly the same. If I was the guy playing Reede Smith I would be as surprised.
Some playing-around:
Reede Smith is an anagram of "The Red is me".
Reede Smith ... Reed - Red, Smith - Tagliaferro (cutiron) ... is this a coincedence?
You don't have to convince me who Red John is, you have to convince me it isn't Reede Smith. :)
Thanks for reading & let me know if I did a mistake in my deductions or your thoughts about this. Excited to read.
