LATEST THEORIES

I have only seen up to Season 5, but it seems clear to me. I can't recall some exact episodes or details off the top of my head, but in the episode where Jane is taken hostage by college students, who killed a classmate and made it look like it was Red John, a suspect was "Grady Ship". Jane goes into the old motel to investigate and is taken hostage to be in a film where he is "sacrificed" to Red John. Red John comes to his "rescue" and shoots his captors for making a "cheap imitation of his work". He is masked, but pay close attention to Red John's mannerisms, body language etc. First clue.

Second, is in an episode early in Season 5, a flash back episode to back when Jane came to work with the CBI, Alexa Shultz calls Lisbon from a limo, and asks to be kept in the loop about Jane's activities after he has been taken on officially as a consultant, she says "It's always good to have a friend in the FBI", which I believe is a quite obvious hint to confirm Jane's suspicion of their being a RJ disciple in the FBI. After she hangs up there is a quick scene where Kirkland is the seat across from her, he says thankyou, Like I said, I've only seen to episode 5 so I'm not sure what has panned out past there, but at this point I believe Alexa is the RJ disciple.

In Season 5 Episode 8, When Jane breaks Lorelai out of prison, Kirkland comes into the storyline again, I believe because he wanted in on the investigation and planned to kill Lorelai when he found her to silence her.. I noted he is always wearing a red/maroon tie. When he first appears and is speaking with Lisbon in a low voice, he sounds very similar to Red John, he could easily manipulate his voice into the higher pitch recognised as Red John's. In this episode Jane passes Kirkland in the hall at CBI and Kirkland says Hi Jane and Jane responds "Do I know you?" Kirkland replies "No, but I know you" and choofs off.  Later on, after Lorelai finds out Jane staged his own kidnapping by her, she is beating him up in the motel room and she says she's surprised Jane and Red John didn't become life long friends the moment they shook hands. All this put together I think Kirkland is the most likely option, the scene where Jane has five suspects at gunpoint I believe is a conspiracy as was one theory. Also, if you go back and watch those five's body language etc through the series, watch closely their build, voice, mannerisms etc, and compare it to when you actually see Red John in the Grady Ship episode, I think Kirkland is more likely.

I've realized something and have changed my mind. Mostly I don't care who RJ is as long as it is original, well written, and mostly lives up to the great mystery that has been created. I also never real cared who others think RJ is or want RJ to be (even the people who saw Partridge die on screen and still think he will come back from the dead).

What I realized tho, and please take no offense (though I can understand if some do), but when he hear people wanting Mashburn, Stiles, or Partridge, to be RJ, I think they dont realize they are rooting for a cliche. The reason the "rich guy secret killer," or "forensics guy killer," or the charismatic spiritual leader hidden criminal mastermind" are all cliches, is because they've been done very well and written well on many shows and movies. When I see folks putting their theories out there I can't help but think, "I bet this guy forgot that they saw a similar character on a similar show and it was a good twist." The problem with any of those three being RJ, is that it will be fairly unoriginal and very cliche. Even the "small town sheriff secret murderer" is a bit cliche...sorry Xander.

I am also in the "anybody but Reed" camp, but even if it turns out to be him, I may not be dissapointed if they write/develop the hell out of the backstory and it is original.

Originally I thought Hafner was a lazy character add by Heller to add another red herring and I really thought Partride was RJ until we saw him die and watched as Lisbon pretty much confirmed he was dead. Next, I thought Hafner was RJ (so many clues and descriptions fit and it feels right). Whats changed is that even though I didnt care if it really was Hafner, I do now. I really want it to be Hafner.

I feel like if I took over now, Heller has set it up perfectly that I could right one hell of an original backstory and conclusion. To see Hafner's mostly bland character with no real typical Hollywood serial killer cliche show another side and completely transform to be RJ could be a marvelous thing to watch.

See Simon and Reed Diamond lock eyes during the kill scene. See the devious side of Hafner that none of us can really imagine until its shown to us by the actor on the TV. could be a very cool thing, and it would be very original.

Just to add one more important observation to my theory 11376

RJ's victims have mostly been women (when he started killing) - in other words, when he was younger. At this stage he was possibly still unable to control the urges guiding him (until he started channeling his 'tendencies' - possibly after spending time with Mr Stiles: into far greater things than simply killing - a criminal empire)

When women are victims of serials (his earlier victims) one usually pulls up a mommy issue. Kirkland has serious mommy issues.

Mother killed herself to escape a brutal marriage, leaving the twins behind to take all the cruelty and pain alone. In Bob's mind his mother abandoned them, leaving them to take a world of emotional and physical hurt from a sadistic father.

'I won't leave you'....said rather sarcastically as Lennon is dying.

Could this not be the ideal kick off for a young RJ? Those smiley faces have always come across as 'child like'. A crying child's face trying to cover the tears with a 'fake smile' - exactly how a young person would feel after a mom's suicide, 'perceived abandonment' to a life of pain with an almost satanic father.

So mom's suicide is Bob's emotional trigger. (How did she kill herself? Perhaps she slashed her wrists with a linoleum floor cutter - which would finally explain to me why RJ uses such a weapon.....it's a household item from a father's garage type of weapon IMHO)

RJ is born.
Finds his way to visualize
Starts killing women (and others), and signing his scenes with the 'child's crying/smiling face'.
Brett Stiles sees huge potential - but needs Bob to channel that sociopathic potential in a way that is bigger, better. Eventually TT is born.

Maybe?

Anyway, Kirkland is also the only suspect who has given us the 'mommy suicide' story - what a trigger for the dawn of RJ.

Okay... so I have to say this, because I keep reading people referring to the pigeon thing as possibly being a reference to Brett Partridge, and it's driving me a little nuts.  Folks, a pigeon and a partridge are not the same... not even remotely.  They don't look alike, they don't sound alike.  They are barely related.  Pigeons are of the order Columbiformes, while Partridges are of the order Galliformes.  The only point at which the two birds relate is at the class level Aves... i.e. birds.  A chicken or turkey is much more closely related to a partridge than a pigeon is.

That being said... I guess I could cut someone some slack if they were referring to the Partridge Pigeon... but I think I might be giving someone credit where it isn't due. ;)

Well I know of two TRUSTWORTHY sources that have watched the episode already and spoiled a little.

SPOILER ALERT

1. Someone from the past "long gone" comes back.

2. There are MULTIPLE CASUALTIES from the bomb. Goodbye Stiles and Haffner. We know Smith and Bertrum live so I assume it's the visualize duo since they're together when the bomb goes off.

3. Something in the last minute CHANGES THINGS FOR THE CBI moving forward.

4. Something from season 2 is explained.

Obviously I have believed that BP is red john from the beginning, and this is a spoiler.

Patrick strangles RJ in a park and watches him die. TV guide has already reported that. Now I ask. Do you think he could strangle Bertrum or Smith? F no. Now a skinny guy like BP?!?!?!?!?!
