Hi all -- perhaps someone can help me out with this...

You know how one poster said Red John said "ThereZa can't speak right now" and pronounced the "s" as a "z"?

Well, I shared this little tidbit with Mrs_Obvious and she says she thinks that's how Bertram says Theresa's name.

Bertram? That lame-o? Well anything's possible -- what do you think, is that how he says her name?

Have you ever met anyone named WALDO? Would you ever name a kid Waldo?

Think about it -- not the comic book but just the name. Don't think of the Van Halen video for Hot for Teacher either, because that's taking it farther than I want to go with this. Just think of the type of person the word "Waldo" brings to mind.

Now of the 7 (... 6 ... 5) suspect on the list, which one would you name WALDO?

Bertram's kind of a Waldo, and -- back to the idea of the comic book -- is always just kind of there in the background. He doesn't really do anything. In fact, he does not really get involved or influence the plot much. He really prefers to stay out of the way.

Now I'm not saying I know who Red John is. After all this time, Patrick Jane does not even know who he is. If he did, he would kill him. Immediately. He'd just walk right into the office and shoot him on the spot first chance he got.

In Strawberries and Cream, Jane made sure Bertram was with him when he had his elaborate trap set to reveal the identity of Red John. He had a gun with him too, and Jane never carries a gun. And he used that gun to kill the man he thought was Red John. Right there, in public, in broad daylight. So you can be sure that if Jane knew Bertram was Red John, he'd shoot him right away. But you can't just shoot Waldo, unless you are sure he's Red John.

One thing that really stood out to me is that in an interview Bruno Heller (director/producer of the mentalist) compared the red john chase to moby dick because the fisherman (cbi team) are on the boats going after the whale (Red John) once he is sighted. In the season 6 premiere bertram says he wants to be on the boat when they catch that fish (speaking of Red John)

Apparently name definitions are very important to Bruno Heller. Check out this interview question answered by the creator himself:

"Q: Can you tell us why The Mentalist's name is Patrick Jane?
BH: Hello! This is the first time that someone asks me this question, and this needs to be developed. Primarily, Patrick is a good old Irish name and I adore it. Moreover, his surname -Jane- is a woman's name, an aspect that I wanted to sneak in his identity, because his personality is gracious and seductive. Lastly, in English, Jane is pronounced "jaine", like an ascetic religion that extol the virtues of the
nonviolence. The Mentalist likes better other tools to reach his goals."

After looking up all the definitions for all 7 men on the list, only Gale Bertram's was of any significance:

Gale = strong wind (denotes mystery, elusiveness, and of course strength)

Bertram = "The name Bertram comes from the Germanic name Bertram, which is composed of the elements berht, meaning "bright" or "famous," and hrabn, meaning "raven." So basically a dark, brilliant, and famous creature--not to mention the notorious reputation of ravens in our culture.

As for all you pinning the red on Bret Partridge. Would Bruno Heller name Red John after a "plump game bird"?

PS: Check out the creepy music tone with the picture of Gale Bertram on the wall at the very end of the episode "If it bleeds, it leads" (Season 5, Episode 7) when Patrick exits with tea in hand. It illustrates perfectly how Bertram, like a raven on his perch, has his eye on everybody's back, from a position of prestige, advantage, and control.

Hey!

I think Gale Bertram is Red John and here's why:

Season 3, Jane had 5 suspects who can be RJ's CBI mole. They were Brenda Shettrick, Osvaldo Ardiles, Gale Bertram, Craig O'Laughlin and J.J. LaRoche. So, O'Laughlin was the CBI mole. He was a bad guy. LaRoche has got the Tupperware box. He is bad guy. Shettrick was Tommy Volkers CBI mole. She also was bad guy.

Names left are Ardiles and Bertram.
I think that in season 6 Ardiles kills someone. So he is bad guy too.
The only one left is Bertram (RJ) ,who is in PJ's RJ suspects list.
So Bertram has to be Red John.

Bertram knows everything about Jane, he's team and the CBI. No one suspects the CBI director.
And Gale Bertram was in the shopping mall with Patrick Jane and Timothy Carter.

P.S. I don't speak English. I'm sorry if there's any mistakes in the text!

This theory is a loose one and just a wild thought;

I was watching the pilot today, in which they mention how people look at the magicians assistant instead of the magician. Maybe Bertram, Smith etc are trying to hide their shady goings on by creating a distraction, maybe they created Red John!
