So many suspects, so many logical answers to the question that's been haunting my mind for the past 5 seasons of The Mentalist. Who is Red John? To be fair you could likely come up with a logical defense for every person on Jane's final list of 7. I have chosen Jane as the "Accuse"d simply because I have to chose someone and if you're simply and solely interested in that skip to the very last paragraph. However I have not actually decided myself if I truly believe that Jane is Red John.
Starting off with Brett Partridge who has been my #1 for a long time now, fits the physical description given by Rosalind Harker, as well as the creepy persona given off by him whenever he is at a crime scene with Jane. Personally I don't think there's enough substance however to allow for this, you have to realize, there has to be more than just a physical description and a creepy persona for the literal jaw drop that will occur when the name or names is/are finally released.
"Names" you probably noted I used in the ending of the last paragraph, now this is a new theory I have recently come upon through pictures and other theories I've read. I'm sure most of you are aware of the
"He Is Mar" scene where one of Red John's victims was killed and supposedly left "He Is Mar" on the wall. I don't feel comfortable developing any kind of conclusive response to this as I feel without further evidence it can go both ways. Instead I will leave multiple points around it any my opinion. It should be noted the extreme caution and care that Red John has had up until this point, to the extent similar to Jane, do you really think it's likely for him to have been so careless and so sloppy to have left the suspect alive and able to right a message that could potentially end his time as the infamous Red John? "He Is Mar" in that order and shape seen in the actual scene itself couldn't really amount to much, what words start with Mar that could be so conclusive someone would choose that over anything else to right when dying. Instead I think it would be more likely that it was meant to be something else, turning out to look like "Mar". http://gyazo.com/07130735723473056f379666645a48da
For example, "He Is Jane", or "He is Many" both can be seen if you look carefully. If you don't understand what I mean by that, or can't see it, simply Google either one of those quotes and i'm sure you'll find something.
I could probably go on for hours and hours sitting here typing out theories both supporting and rebutting each argument around each of these 7 suspects, but to be honest I feel you cannot make any kind of certain conclusion without further evidence, cause hey if it was that easy someone would have a conclusion that would be widely accepted by now. For a final point I leave you with this, something I have to wrap my brain around. In one of the few scenes Red John is seen in, where Rosalind is on the phone with if my memory suits me Jane, we see the arm and hand of the suggested Red John, the thing about TV and crime TV especially is that nothing is coincidence, the one thing i find notable about that picture (linked below), the tea cup, and who do we know who loves tea? I know he's not on the list but Tea has been HUGE for Jane in every season, HUGE. Nothing is coincidence. The smallest details are what makes the difference.
