Using all clues given throughout the show so far, i've in the past narrowed the suspect list down to 2 names - Robert Kirkland and Ray Haffner. I shall try and deduce RJ's identity from these 2, using the new clues given today. Patrick obviously has faith in Dr. Miller's ability, so i'll assume what she said prior to being killed is correct.
1. RJ is said to have a phobia of some sort - neither has an obvious dislike of anything, so nobody stands out here
2. RJ is said to be a narcissist - Narcissism is a trait seen in those who have too much ego, and is apparent when someone's ego has been damaged. We saw how badly Haffner took losing to Jane in "Little Red Book", which suggests a large ego, and damaged pride. Kirkland hasn't demonstrated ego problems, he's very calm and measured, so he's not so much a narcissist, much more likely a sociopath.
3. RJ is middle aged - both of these men are in their 40's, Haffner is (by the show's logic) 46, given he was 21 in 1988, and now it's 2013. Kevin Corrigan (who plays Kirkland) is 44, so the character would be roughly the same age.
4. RJ has many friends around him - Haffner is a member of Visualize, who all share the same goals, and are largely friends to each other, it would give him many people to rely on. He also has FBI and CBI links, giving him a large social circle. Kirkland works for DHS (Homeland Security), so he would also have many colleagues to call on and help him out, but not as many as Haffner, given his more limited role.
5. He is an excellent whistler - rather trivial, i'd assume both men can whistle
6. He doesn't deal well with adversity and conflict. This is where Haffner jumps out at me. He did not handle PJ well at all, he was constantly on edge, he looked seriously uncomfortable, and got shown up badly. Kirkland again, looks far calmer around PJ, even starting conversation with him, and he has also shown far greater cool under pressure, he killed Jason Lennon with ease.
7. He's an excellent liar - Kirkland scores points here, he's far smoother under pressure than Haffner is, Haffner couldn't even lie convincingly to Lisbon, unless he's tricking everyone.
From these new clues, i give the score 3-1 to Haffner, he's clearly a narcissist, has a large social circle and isn't good under pressure, but the lying part is making me question my decision, though my gut has said for ages that it's Haffner, ever since "The Red Barn."
My guess is that Kirkland (like Jane), is on a personal quest against RJ and his organisation, though i can't think of a reason, maybe something to do with national security. If he was RJ, he wouldn't need to break in and steal PJ's Red John casework.
So by process of elimination, and i'm not 100% sold on this myself, it has to be Ray Haffner. There is too much evidence against him, be it the old evidence, such as the physical description, or the new evidence, as i've explained.
My one hope is that Reed Diamond has the acting chops to pull this off, otherwise TV's greatest modern mystery is going to be a real waste.
