Patrick Jane in Red Moon:  "If you truly want revenge, you have to be hard. You have to be dishonest
and devious and cold. You can't let people see what's in your heart."

Patrick has been pretty clear all along that he's using the CBI.  (He might, at times, also be helping them, but that's not his primary reason for associating with them.)  So, why exactly should we believe he would tell Lisbon who his final few suspects were?  Lisbon has made no secret of the fact that she doesn't want Jane to kill Red John, and the CBI team seems to leak information like a sieve.

Patrick Jane is the exact opposite of an idiot.  So why on Earth would he tell his top-secret list of men suspected to include to the one he wants to kill, to the woman whose team can't keep a secret and who intends to stop him from killing the man?  The only possible reason is that he wants the list leaked "against his will" (to lend credibility to it), and he knows the man he wants to kill isn't on it...

At this point, I'm really starting to believe that being named on Jane's list of Red John Suspects is practically proof that you aren't Red John...  ;)
