Mashburn seems to have many of the talents of Patrick Jane, something Red John shares. He has the charm and charisma to manipulate others with apparent ease and innocence, another fact we know of Red John - his people seem to view him with almost god-like awe.  Brett Styles is a manipulator  but lacks Mashburn's polish: Styles tricks people, Mashburn charms them.
